Chapter 7 - The Final Divorce Decree

Six months later. Spring 2026.

The formal divorce proceedings between Madison Vance and Ethan Carter took place in Division 12 of the Cook County Domestic Relations Court.

Because Ethan’s legal team had been shattered by the bankruptcy proceedings, and because his signature on the fraudulent trust guarantees had been proven in federal court, the divorce settlement was brutally swift.

Ethan sat at the defense table in a cheap, off-the-rack grey suit provided by his public defender. His face was gaunt, his hair thinning, his shoulders hunched in permanent defeat.

Beside me sat Arthur Pendelton and Julian Mercer.

Judge Brenda Harrison reviewed the final marital settlement agreement, adjusting her glasses as she flipped through the pages.

"Under the terms of this agreement," Judge Harrison stated into the quiet courtroom, "Mr. Ethan Carter relinquishes all claims to any real property, trust assets, corporate entities, or personal gifts associated with the Vance and Bennett estates. Furthermore, Mr. Carter accepts sole civil liability for the $12 million defaulted corporate loans fraudulently executed under Carter Logistics."

Judge Harrison looked over her bench at Ethan.

"Mr. Carter, do you understand and accept these terms?"

Ethan stood up slowly, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the table. He looked across the room at me.

For six months, I had refused his letters, blocked his phone calls from the county detention center, and declined every plea for an interview from the tabloid press.

"I accept," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking. "I... I just want to say... I'm sorry, Madison. I was stupid. I let my mother and father control me. I threw away the best thing that ever happened to me."

I sat at my table, looking at him with absolute calm.

There was no hatred left in my heart for Ethan Carter. There was no pain, no lingering regret, no desire for further revenge. There was only the quiet, profound realization that he was simply a stranger who had occupied three years of my past.

"I accept your apology, Ethan," I said, my voice steady and peaceful. "And I wish you well with your legal proceedings."

Judge Harrison slammed her wooden gavel onto the block.

THUD.

"The marriage between Madison Vance and Ethan Carter is hereby dissolved. Court is adjourned."

As the judge exited the bench, Ethan was led away through a side door by two court bailiffs to face his formal federal arraignment for wire fraud.

I stood up, taking a deep, clean breath of spring air through the open courtroom window.

Julian stepped beside me, gently wrapping a tailored coat around my shoulders.

"How do you feel?" Julian asked softly, his grey eyes searching my face with deep warmth.

May you like

I looked at him, feeling the solid, unshakeable ground beneath my feet.

"I feel," I smiled, "like my life is finally starting."
