Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Friday morning arrived with grey skies and a cold autumn rain slicking the streets of Chicago.
At 9:00 AM, the bankruptcy attorney for Carter Logistics officially filed Chapter 11 protection at the US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
The fall of the Carter empire was swift, brutal, and absolute.
By noon, news vans were parked outside the Carter family mansion in Lake Forest. Financial auditors from the Securities and Exchange Commission arrived with federal subpoenas, investigating Ethan Carter’s fraudulent execution of trust guarantees and Patricia Carter’s unrecorded cash withdrawals from company payroll accounts over the preceding two years.
Sitting in my high-floor office at the Bennett Grand, I watched the television broadcast on the wall monitor while reviewing the final architectural blueprints for the new expansion tower with Julian.
On the screen, reporters caught Ethan trying to slip out the back entrance of his father's estate, carrying two leather duffel bags. He was swarmed by journalists thrusting microphones into his pale, hollow face.
"Ethan! Is it true your wife evicted you from your home?!"
"Ethan! Did you fraudulently use Madison Vance’s trust fund to cover company debts?!"
"Ethan! Are you facing federal bank fraud charges?!"
Ethan ducked his head, shoving his way into a cheap yellow taxi cab, looking utterly destroyed, broke, and humiliated before the entire world.
Chloe knocked gently on my office door, stepping inside.
"Miss Vance... Patricia Carter is downstairs in the lobby again," Chloe reported quietly. "She isn't shouting this time. She... she’s crying. She’s begging to see you for five minutes."
Julian immediately stood up from the drafting table. "I'll have Marcus Vance throw her out."
"No, Julian," I said softly, setting my red reviewing pen down. "I'll go down to the lobby myself."
"Madison, you don't owe that woman anything," Julian urged gently, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. His touch was warm, protective, and sent a quiet wave of reassurance through my chest.
"I know I don't," I replied, looking into his steady grey eyes. "Which is why seeing her now will prove to both of us that she no longer has any power over me."
I walked down to the main lobby.
Standing near the grand marble fountain, stripped of her designer jewelry, her hair disheveled, wearing an old raincoat, was Patricia Carter.
When she saw me approach, flanked by two discreet hotel security officers, she ran toward me, collapsing onto her knees on the marble floor, grasping at the hem of my trousers.
"Madison! Please! I beg you!" Patricia sobbed hysterical tears, her face splotched red. "Talk to the bank! Tell the SEC it was all a misunderstanding! Harold has locked himself in his study, and the federal agents are taking our cars! We have nothing left!"
I stepped back, pulling my clothing away from her trembling fingers. I looked down at the woman who had spent three years mocking my clothing, insulting my intellect, and treating me like a charity case in my own home.
"Stand up, Patricia," I said, my voice completely devoid of anger or pity. "Have some dignity."
"I have no dignity left!" she wept, looking up at me with desperate, hollow eyes. "We are ruined! Ethan is facing prison! Please... you were my daughter-in-law! You loved Ethan!"
"I loved the man I thought Ethan was," I corrected her calmly. "A man who defended his wife, a man who built a life with me. But Ethan was never that man. He was just your puppet, waiting for my grandmother to die so you could steal her money."
"We were wrong! I was wrong!" Patricia begged, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "Please, Madison... just give us enough to pay the legal fees! Give us a million dollars! It's nothing to you now!"
I looked at the grand crystal chandeliers above us, then back down at her.
"My grandmother gave me a $150 million hotel on my birthday, Patricia," I said softly. "But the real gift she gave me... was showing me who you were before I spent another ten years drowning in your toxic family."
I turned to Captain Marcus Vance.

"Escort Mrs. Carter outside. If she returns, enforce the restraining order."
I walked back toward the private executive elevators, leaving Patricia’s sobbing cries behind me, echoing into the cavernous marble lobby until they vanished completely.
