Chapter 7 - The Rebuilding

In the weeks that followed the court ruling, the storm that had battered Carter Ridge began to clear, replaced by an era of unprecedented renewal.

With Evan and Dad legally removed from the property, Sarah Vance and I threw ourselves into restructuring the venue.

We discovered that under my father's mismanaged leadership, Carter Ridge had been bleeding money on overpriced, corrupt vendor contracts—many of which were run by Evan’s friends. I immediately canceled those contracts, replacing them with talented, local North Carolina artisans, caterers, and florists.

I took over full operational control as Managing Director and CEO.

I moved out of the downtown hotel and rented a charming, historic stone cottage nestled in the mountains ten minutes from the venue. I brought my work from Seattle to a close, officially making Asheville my permanent home.

One afternoon in mid-December, as snow began to dust the timber beams of the main barn, a white pickup truck pulled into the driveway.

Clare stepped out, carrying a thermos of hot cocoa.

She walked into the main office, where I was reviewing the 2027 wedding booking calendar.

“Hey, Nicole,” Clare said, offering a warm, genuine smile.

“Clare! Come in,” I said, rising to hug her.

Over the past month, Clare and I had grown remarkably close. She had officially filed for divorce from Evan, secured full custody of their two children, and moved into a lovely townhouse downtown. With my help, she had secured a job as the event marketing coordinator for a luxury hotel in Asheville, earning her own income for the first time in ten years.

“How are the kids doing?” I asked, pouring the cocoa into two mugs.

“They’re thriving,” Clare smiled, her eyes bright and clear. “They love their new school. And... they ask about their Aunt Nicole every day.”

I felt a warm flush in my chest. “Bring them over to the cottage this weekend. We’ll bake holiday cookies.”

Clare looked at me, her expression turning sincere and emotional. “I came to say thank you, Nicole. If you hadn't brought the truth to light... I would still be trapped in that toxic house, enabling a man who was destroying our lives. You gave me the courage to leave.”

“You saved yourself, Clare,” I said softly, taking her hands. “You chose your children over the lie.”

“How are... your parents?” Clare asked hesitantly.

I looked out the window at the falling snow.

After the court ruling, Dad had been forced to surrender his seventy percent equity in Carter Ridge to satisfy the restitution debts and cover the predatory second mortgage. I bought out his shares using a structured corporate loan, making me the one hundred percent sole owner of Carter Ridge.

Dad and Mom had been forced to sell their grand estate and move into a small, modest retirement condo in town. Evan was currently awaiting trial on federal bank fraud and tax evasion charges, facing a potential five-year prison sentence.

“Dad calls me once a week,” I admitted. “He leaves short voicemails. He doesn't ask for money or business favors anymore. He just asks how I’m doing... and tells me he’s proud of me.”

“Do you talk to him?” Clare asked gently.

“Not yet,” I said, looking at the glowing venue calendar filled with sixty booked weddings for the coming year. “I’m not ready. But... maybe someday.”
