Chapter 4 - The Discovery

By early December, the forensic accounting team hired by Sarah Vance completed their deep-dive audit of Carter Ridge LLC and its affiliated bank accounts.
What they uncovered elevated the case from a civil business dispute to a criminal nightmare for my father and brother.
On a cold Tuesday morning, Sarah, my attorney David Thorne, and I gathered in a conference room in downtown Asheville.
David Thorne, a sharp, white-haired attorney with forty years of experience in corporate law, spread a series of complex flowcharts across the table.
“Nicole,” David began, tapping a red line on the chart. “The three hundred and twelve thousand dollars in personal diversions to Evan was just the tip of the iceberg.”
I leaned forward, my stomach tightening. “What else did you find?”
“Your father didn't just allow Evan to steal from Carter Ridge,” David explained. “To cover up the shortfalls and keep the venue operating while paying Evan’s fees, your father took out an unauthorized second mortgage on the Carter Ridge property through a private predatory lender in Atlanta.”
My jaw dropped. “A private mortgage? Without my consent?”
“Precisely,” Sarah Vance chimed in. “Because you own thirty percent of the voting shares, any major encumbrance on the real estate required your written approval. Your father forged your signature on the loan documents fifteen months ago. He borrowed five hundred thousand dollars against the land.”
I sank back into my chair, feeling faint. “Five hundred thousand dollars... where did that money go?”
David exchanged a grave look with Sarah.
“That’s the worst part,” David said quietly. “About two hundred thousand went to service the original commercial debt and keep the venue looking prosperous. The remaining three hundred thousand was wired directly into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.”
“An offshore account?” I repeated, bewildered. “Owned by whom?”
“Not your father,” David replied. “Owned solely by Evan Carter.”
I sat in complete shock.
My father had forged my name to borrow half a million dollars against the family business—risking total bankruptcy—and Evan had secretly funneled the vast majority of that money into a personal offshore tax haven, leaving Dad to face the financial ruin alone.
“Does my father know Evan moved the money offshore?” I asked.
“We don't think so,” Sarah said. “When we interviewed your father’s accountant yesterday, she admitted that Robert believed the five hundred thousand was being held in a corporate reserve account managed by Evan for 'future venue expansion.' Evan lied to his own father. He was preparing to bleed Carter Ridge dry, leave your parents with the massive debt, and flee the country if the business collapsed.”
I closed my eyes.
It was a betrayal so profound, so sociopathic, that it left me breathless.
Dad had spent his entire life protecting Evan, favoring him, erasing me, and sacrificing my hard work to elevate his golden son.
And all the while, his golden son was preparing to destroy him.
“What’s the next move, David?” I asked opening my eyes.
David Thorne smiled—a sharp, lethal smile.
“We file for an emergency court hearing on Friday,” David said. “We present these wire transfers to Judge Miller. We freeze Evan’s domestic assets, issue a subpoena for the Cayman accounts, and refer the forgery files directly to the State Attorney General’s Criminal Division.”

He leaned across the table, looking at me with immense respect.
“Your father and brother played a dangerous game, Nicole. But on Friday, the house comes crashing down.”
