Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Hill
A week after the successful gala, Nathan invited Sarah and Lily for a weekend retreat to his private villa overlooking the dramatic coastal cliffs of the Pacific Ocean. The sea breeze was warm, carrying the fresh scent of saltwater and wild blossoms.
While Lily played happily on the sprawling green lawn with a newly adopted golden retriever puppy named Thread, Nathan and Sarah walked slowly along the stone path leading to the edge of the cliff overlook.
Sarah paused, watching Lily laugh as she chased the puppy across the grass. "Sometimes I still wake up in the middle of the night terrified that this is all a dream," Sarah said softly, turning to look at Nathan. "That I'm still in that cold bed in Apartment 4B, listening to the hum of the sewing machine, wondering how I'm going to feed my daughter tomorrow."
Nathan stopped and turned to face her, gently taking both of her soft hands in his.
"It's not a dream, Sarah," Nathan said, his eyes filled with profound tenderness. "You and Lily gave me back my life. Before I met you two, I was just a ghost living in an empty castle. You gave me a purpose. You gave me a home."
Sarah looked up at him, her heart swelling with emotion. "You saved our lives, Nathan. In every way a person can be saved."
Nathan reached into his coat pocket. He didn't pull out a corporate document or a checkbook. He pulled out a small, velvet ring box. He took a gentle breath, looked deeply into Sarah’s eyes, and sank down onto one knee on the grassy hilltop.
Sarah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears immediately welled in her eyes.
"Sarah," Nathan said, his voice steady and full of devotion. "I want to spend the rest of my days protecting you, supporting your dreams, and watching Lily grow into the extraordinary woman she is destined to be. I don't want to just be your savior or your landlord. I want to be your partner, your husband, and a real father to Lily. Will you marry me?"
From across the lawn, Lily had stopped playing. She stood quietly watching them, holding her puppy in her arms, her little face illuminated by a hopeful smile.

Sarah wiped away her tears, her face breaking into the most radiant smile Nathan had ever seen. "Yes, Nathan! Yes! A thousand times yes!"
Nathan stood up, slipped the sparkling diamond ring onto her finger, and pulled her into a warm, passionate embrace. Lily came running over, giggling with pure delight, and threw her arms around both of their legs. Nathan reached down, lifting Lily into his arms so all three of them were wrapped in one tight, unbreakable hug overlooking the endless blue ocean.
