Chapter 2 - Shadows at the Door

The larger of the two men, a heavy-set enforcer wearing a leather jacket, grabbed the hand-crank sewing machine off the wooden table. Lily let out a soft cry, clutching a pile of fabric to her chest, her body shaking like a leaf in a storm.

"Put it down," Nathan's voice echoed through the narrow corridor, calm, cold, and deadlier than a loaded gun.

The two men spun around. The leader sneered, sizing up Nathan’s tailor-made suit and expensive leather shoes. "Who the hell are you? The big boss from uptown? Mind your own business, rich guy. This woman owes money to people you don't want to cross."

Nathan stepped into the apartment, deliberately closing the door behind him and standing between the enforcers and the little girl. Lily immediately scrambled behind Nathan’s legs, grabbing the hem of his coat with her tiny, thread-stained fingers. The instinctual gesture sent a sharp surge of protective instinct straight to Nathan’s heart.

"I said, put the machine down," Nathan repeated, taking a step forward. "You are trespassing on my property. As of two hours ago, I own this building, and everyone inside it is under my protection."

The enforcer laughed harshly. "Property owner? Great! Then you can pay her debt. Three thousand dollars. Cash. Right now, or we break something."

Without blinking, Nathan reached into his inner pocket, pulled out a checkbook, and swiftly wrote a check for five thousand dollars. He ripped it off and slapped it against the man's chest. "There's five thousand. Three for the debt, two for you to lose this address forever. If I ever see your faces within five blocks of this child again, I won't call the police. I will buy out your loan operation and destroy every single person you work for. Do we understand each other?"

The sheer authority in Nathan's stance, backed by the undeniable power of infinite wealth, made the two thugs exchange a nervous glance. The leader snatched the check, glared at Nathan, and gestured for his partner to leave. "You're crazy, man," the thug muttered as they pushed past him and disappeared down the stairs.

Once the door clicked shut, the heavy silence returned to the room. Lily slowly let go of Nathan's coat, her wide brown eyes filled with confusion and awe.

"Are you... an angel?" she asked softly, her voice barely a whisper.

Nathan felt a strange lump form in his throat. He crouched down to her eye level, opening the first-aid kit he had brought. "No, Lily. I'm just a man who made a lot of mistakes in the past. May I see your hands?"

Hesitantly, Lily extended her tiny hands. Her fingertips were raw, covered in tiny red dots from needle pricks and darkened by thread dye. Nathan gently cleaned the wounds with antiseptic wipes, applying soothing ointment and light bandages over her sore fingers. He worked with a gentle precision that he hadn't used in over fifteen years—a tenderness he thought had died with his daughter Clara.

"Why did you come back?" a weak, raspy voice came from the inner room.

Nathan stood up and walked into the darkened bedroom. Laying on a sunken mattress was Sarah Vance. She was shockingly pale, her skin clinging tightly to her cheekbones, her eyes hollowed by severe exhaustion and kidney failure. Yet, despite her frail frame, her eyes burned with a fierce, protective motherly love.

"Mrs. Vance," Nathan said respectfully. "I am Nathan Cole. I own this building."

"We don't have the rent..." Sarah choked out, trying to push herself up on her elbows. "Please... take whatever we have... but don't throw Lily onto the street. She's only seven... she didn't do anything wrong..."

"Shh," Nathan said, moving to her side and gently easing her back onto the pillow. "Nobody is throwing you out. You don't owe any rent. In fact, an ambulance is on its way right now. You are being transferred to St. Jude’s Hospital. The best kidney specialists in the state are waiting for you."

Sarah looked at him in disbelief, tears welling up in her sunken eyes. "I... I can't pay for a hospital... I have no insurance..."

May you like

"It’s already taken care of," Nathan said firmly. "Every bill, every procedure, every medication. It is paid for."

Sarah covered her face with her trembling, emaciated hands and sobbed silently. Lily ran into the room, throwing her arms around her mother's neck, crying softly in sympathy. Watching the mother and daughter hold onto each other in the dim light of the dilapidated apartment, Nathan felt a heavy stone inside his chest shatter into pieces. He knew then that his life would never be the same again.
