Chapter 2 - The Echoes of Shadows

The night air outside the private medical clinic felt cool and quiet, a stark contrast to the storm that had raged inside the manor just hours before. The medical team worked swiftly, treating Sorrel’s severe ankle lacerations, deep bruising, and malnutrition. As the doctor applied a soothing ointment to the raw red skin left by the iron chain, Sorrel flinched, clutching Hadrian’s jacket so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Hadrian never let go of her hand. Every flinch sent a fresh wave of guilt crashing over him. He had spent months in the icy northern wilderness securing an empire to guarantee her future, blissfully unaware that the true monster was sitting in his own dining room.

"She has minor hairline fractures in her ankle from the heavy iron, sir," the lead doctor reported quietly, pulling Hadrian aside while Sorrel drifted off to sleep under the warm blankets. "Her stress levels are dangerously elevated, and she is severely underweight. It will take months of physical therapy—and emotional healing—for her to fully recover."

Hadrian’s face remained an unreadable mask of stone, but his chest heaved. "She will have the best care money can buy. Spare nothing."

By morning, the news had shattered the elite social circles of the city. Pamela Vance, the pristine socialite heiress engaged to logistics tycoon Hadrian Vance, had been mugshotted, booked, and thrown into a holding cell. The media seized upon the story with ferocity: The Heir, The Orphan, and The Chain.

In her damp jail cell, Pamela was far from defeated. Her father, Arthur Vance, brought in a ruthless defense team led by the notorious trial attorney Julian Sterling. By noon, Sterling had released a public statement claiming the smartwatch recordings were heavily edited digital fabrications designed by Hadrian to steal the Vance Corporation’s remaining assets and frame an innocent woman.

When Hadrian returned to the clinic with fresh clothing for Sorrel, his head of security, Marcus, handed him a tablet showing Sterling’s press conference.

"They're painting you as an unstable, negligent father who abandoned his child for months and fabricated the abuse to cover up your own absence," Marcus said grimly. "Sterling is petitioning the court for an emergency gag order and demanding Pamela's immediate release on bail."

Hadrian looked over at Sorrel, who was sitting up in bed, carefully trying to color a picture book with her bruised little fingers. She looked at him and forced a timid, brave smile.

"Let them try," Hadrian said, his voice deadly quiet. "Sterling thinks this is a game of corporate public relations. He doesn't realize I'm prepared to burn their entire world to the ground."
