CHAPTER 5 – THE PRICE OF LOVING A DANGEROUS MAN

Nicholas Carver had always believed love was a weakness.
A weakness because it gave people something to take.
A weakness because enemies did not need to destroy a man who had nothing.
They only needed to find what he cared about.
And now Nicholas understood the cruelest truth of all.
The strongest man in the room could still be defeated by one person.
Not because that person had power.
Because that person had his heart.
The message arrived at 6:13 in the morning.
No warning.
No signature.
Just a video file.
Nicholas stared at the screen.
For a moment, he did nothing.
Because he already knew.
Adrian.
David stood nearby.
“Don’t open it.”
Nicholas looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because if Adrian sent it, he wants a reaction.”
Nicholas’ jaw tightened.
“He already has one.”
David understood.
Because Nicholas was no longer the man who ignored emotions.
Emma had changed that.
And Adrian knew it.
Emma found Nicholas in the security room.
The room was dark.
Monitors surrounded him.
He looked like the old Nicholas again.
The man before her.
The CEO.
The feared figure.
The man who never showed fear.
But she noticed something.
His hands.
They were clenched.
“Nicholas.”
He turned.
For a second, she saw something behind his eyes.
Pain.
“What happened?”
He looked away.
“Nothing.”
Emma almost smiled.
“You are terrible at lying.”
A faint reaction.
Then silence.
“Nicholas.”
Finally, he handed her the tablet.
The video played.
The screen showed an old recording.
A younger Nicholas.
A younger Adrian.
And their father.
Thomas Carver.
The three of them stood inside the old Carver warehouse.
Emma watched silently.
Thomas looked angry.
“You both still don’t understand.”
Young Nicholas stood straight.
Young Adrian looked impatient.
“The world does not reward kindness.”
Thomas continued.
“It rewards control.”
Emma frowned.
The recording continued.
Thomas placed a folder on the table.
“Inside this folder are the names of everyone who betrayed this family.”
Adrian smiled.
Nicholas looked uncomfortable.
Then Thomas said something that changed everything.
“Only one of you will inherit the empire.”
The video ended.
Emma looked at Nicholas.
“What does this mean?”
Nicholas did not answer.
Because he already knew.
Adrian contacted them an hour later.
A live call.
His face appeared on the screen.
Older.
Colder.
Satisfied.
“Nicholas.”
The brothers stared at each other.
“What do you want?”
Adrian smiled.
“The truth.”
Nicholas’ expression hardened.
“You don’t care about truth.”
“No?”
“You care about winning.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“That’s where you’re wrong.”
He leaned closer.
“I cared about being seen.”
Silence.
Nicholas said nothing.
Adrian continued.
“All my life, I was the second son.”
A pause.
“The backup.”
“The dangerous one.”
“The one everyone watched but never trusted.”
Nicholas looked at him.
“Because you made yourself dangerous.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
For a moment, anger appeared.
Then disappeared.
“You still don’t understand.”
Emma watched the conversation.
And she saw something Nicholas did not.
Adrian was not just angry.
He was hurt.
Not that it excused what he had done.
But it explained the obsession.
“You wanted your father’s approval.”
Adrian looked at Emma.
His eyes narrowed.
“Careful.”
She did not back away.
“You spent your whole life trying to prove you were better than Nicholas.”
Silence.
“Because you believed he was loved more.”
Nicholas looked at her.
Surprised.
Adrian stared.
Then smiled.
“You’re smart.”
A pause.
“That’s why you’re dangerous.”
The call ended.
But the damage was done.
Because Adrian had planted something.
A question.
A doubt.
And Nicholas hated doubts.
That evening, Emma found Nicholas in the library.
He was staring at an old photograph.
His family.
Before everything broke.
“You miss them.”
Nicholas did not deny it.
“Yes.”
She sat beside him.
“Your father.”
“Yes.”
“Even after everything?”
Nicholas looked at the picture.
“People can hurt you and still be people you loved.”
Emma understood.
Because love was complicated.
It did not disappear just because someone disappointed you.
“What did he do to Adrian?”
Nicholas was quiet.
Then:
“He made us compete.”
Emma frowned.
“For what?”
“Everything.”
A pause.
“Approval.”
“Power.”
“Respect.”
Emma looked at him.
“That’s why you became who you are.”
Nicholas nodded.
“Yes.”
“And Adrian?”
“He became what he thought he needed to become.”
The next morning, Emma discovered something.
A hidden account.
Not from Carver International.
From years earlier.
She stared at the documents.
“Nicholas.”
He entered.
“What?”
“I found something.”
He looked at the screen.
Then froze.
The account belonged to Thomas Carver.
But the transactions were impossible.
Money had been transferred to protect someone.
Not the company.
Not the family.
Someone else.
“Who is Elena Moretti?”
Nicholas went completely still.
Emma noticed.
“Who is she?”
His expression changed.
Pain.
Recognition.
Fear.
“My mother.”
Emma blinked.
“Your mother?”
Nicholas looked at the documents.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because my mother died twenty-five years ago.”
The investigation changed immediately.
The money.
The hidden accounts.
The missing records.
Everything pointed to one conclusion.
Thomas Carver had hidden something.
A secret bigger than the empire.
David discovered the final piece.
A birth certificate.
A second identity.
A child.
Emma read it.
Then looked at Nicholas.
Her voice was quiet.
“Nicholas…”
He looked at the paper.
And his world stopped.
The child’s name.
Adrian Thomas Carver.
But the mother listed…
Was not Elena Carver.
It was another woman.
Adrian was not Nicholas’ brother.
Not by blood.
When Nicholas confronted Adrian, there was no anger.
Only disbelief.
“You knew.”
Adrian stood silently.
“Yes.”
“You knew our entire lives were built on a lie.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Because he chose you.”
Nicholas stared.
“What?”
“Our father.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“He knew.”
A pause.
“He knew I wasn’t his son.”
The room became silent.
“And he still raised you as his heir.”
Nicholas felt the weight of those words.
“He lied.”
“Yes.”
Adrian smiled bitterly.
“But he loved you.”
The confession hurt more than any threat.
Emma watched Nicholas struggle.
For the first time, she saw the powerful man become simply human.
A son.
A brother.
Someone who had spent his whole life chasing answers.
And finally found only more pain.
She approached him.
“Nicholas.”
He looked at her.
“I don’t know who I am.”
The words broke something inside her.
Because Nicholas Carver had always seemed impossible to break.
But he was breaking now.
“I built everything because I thought I had to prove something.”
A pause.
“But what if none of it was mine?”
Emma reached for his hand.
“Then build something that is.”
That night, Adrian made his final move.
He released everything.
Old documents.
Family secrets.
Illegal operations.
Enough information to destroy Carver International forever.
The media exploded.
The board panicked.
The government opened investigations.
Nicholas stood in the middle of the storm.
Everything he built was collapsing.
Again.
But this time…
Something was different.
Years ago, Nicholas would have fought alone.
Destroyed anyone in his path.
Protected the empire.
Protected the name.
Protected the image.
But now he looked at Emma.
And he understood.
The empire was never the important thing.
People were.
“I’m leaving.”
Emma froze.
“What?”
Nicholas looked at her.
“If you stay near me, you’ll keep getting hurt.”
“No.”
“Emma.”
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“You don’t get to decide that for me.”
He looked at her.
“I’m dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“I’ve done things you don’t know.”
“Yes.”
“I might lose everything.”
She stepped closer.
“Then lose it.”
He stared.
“What?”
“Lose the empire.”
A pause.
“Lose the money.”
Another step.
“But don’t lose yourself.”
For the first time, Nicholas Carver cried.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
Just one silent tear.
The kind a man sheds after holding too much pain for too long.
Emma saw it.
And she did not look away.
The next morning, Nicholas made a decision.
He called a press conference.
Everyone expected denial.
Instead, he admitted everything.
Not every crime.
Not every rumor.
But enough.
He announced a full internal investigation.
He surrendered control of several companies.
He accepted responsibility.
The world watched the most powerful man in Chicago choose honesty over protection.
Adrian watched from a hidden location.
Richard Voss stood beside him.
“You lost.”
Adrian smiled.
“No.”
Richard frowned.
“Then why?”
“Because Nicholas finally became the man he was supposed to be.”
A pause.
“And that’s why I’m going to destroy him.”
That night, Emma returned to the estate.
Nicholas stood outside.
“You should leave.”
She looked at him.
“No.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand.”
“My enemies.”
“I know.”
“My past.”
“I know.”
“My mistakes.”
“I know.”
She stepped closer.
“And I also know the man standing in front of me.”
Nicholas looked at her.
“Why?”
Emma smiled sadly.
“Because everyone else saw the monster.”
A pause.
“I saw the man.”
But before Nicholas could answer…
The security alarms activated.
David’s voice came through the speakers.
“Nicholas.”
“What?”
A pause.
“Adrian is here.”
The lights went out.
The entire estate fell into darkness.
Then a message appeared on every screen.
A final video.
Adrian.
Smiling.
“This ends tonight.”
Nicholas grabbed Emma’s hand.
And for the first time…
He did not let go.
Because whatever happened next…
May you like
They would face it together.
