CHAPTER 4 – THE WAR FOR THE CARVER EMPIRE

Nicholas Carver had spent his entire life preparing for war.

He knew how wars started.

A betrayal.

A threat.

A moment of weakness.

He knew how they ended too.

Someone always lost.

Someone always paid.

But what Nicholas never understood was that the most painful wars were not fought against enemies.

They were fought against the people you once loved.

And Adrian Black was not just an enemy.

He was blood.

The abandoned warehouse sat near the edge of Chicago’s industrial district.

Rain hit the broken windows.

The same kind of storm that had almost taken Emma from him weeks earlier.

Nicholas stood outside with David and his security team.

No unnecessary weapons.

No dramatic entrance.

Just silence.

Because Nicholas Carver had learned something.

The loudest men were usually the most afraid.

Adrian had always been different.

He was patient.

Calculated.

He waited until people relaxed.

Then he struck.

“Are you sure he’s inside?”

David asked.

Nicholas looked at the building.

“Yes.”

“How?”

A pause.

“Because he wants me to come.”

David frowned.

“You think it’s a trap?”

“Yes.”

“And you’re walking into it anyway?”

Nicholas looked at him.

“He has something I need.”

David understood.

Not money.

Not information.

Emma’s safety.

Inside the warehouse, Adrian Black stood beside an old wooden table.

He looked almost exactly like Nicholas.

Same dark hair.

Same sharp features.

Same cold eyes.

The difference was what they carried inside.

Nicholas carried guilt.

Adrian carried resentment.

“You took your time.”

Nicholas entered.

“You expected me.”

Adrian smiled.

“I expected you eventually.”

The brothers stared at each other.

Twenty years of anger existed between them.

Twenty years of questions.

Twenty years of things never said.

“You attacked Emma.”

Adrian tilted his head.

“Is that what you think?”

“I know.”

“No.”

Adrian walked slowly around the table.

“You know someone attacked her.”

A pause.

“But you don’t know who.”

Nicholas’ eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying you still don’t understand the game.”

Adrian poured himself a drink.

“You never did.”

Nicholas hated that sentence.

Because it reminded him of their childhood.

Adrian had always believed Nicholas was naive.

Nicholas believed Adrian was cruel.

Their father created the division.

Two sons.

Two paths.

One empire.

Their father had once told them:

“One of you will build the future.”

“And one of you will protect it.”

Nicholas never realized those words would become a prophecy.

Because Adrian never wanted to protect anything.

He wanted to own everything.

“Where is Richard Voss?”

Nicholas asked.

Adrian smiled.

“Still focused on money.”

“Answer.”

“He’s gone.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

Nicholas stepped forward.

“Adrian.”

For the first time, Adrian’s smile disappeared.

“You always do that.”

“Do what?”

“Act like you’re better than me.”

Nicholas stared.

“I never said that.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“Everyone did.”

The warehouse fell silent.

Then Adrian laughed.

“You know what our father told me before he died?”

Nicholas said nothing.

“He said you had the heart to lead.”

A pause.

“And I had the strength.”

Nicholas looked at him.

Adrian continued.

“He was wrong.”

“About what?”

“You had the heart.”

A smile.

“But you were too weak to use it.”

Meanwhile, Emma Callahan was discovering something of her own.

The truth behind the missing money.

She sat inside Carver International’s private investigation room with David.

Documents surrounded her.

“I don’t understand.”

David looked up.

“What?”

“Everyone keeps assuming this was about stealing money.”

“It wasn’t?”

“No.”

She pointed at the records.

“The money wasn’t the goal.”

David frowned.

“Then what was?”

Emma looked at the transactions.

“They were moving money to create evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

She looked at him.

“That Carver International was involved in illegal operations.”

David became quiet.

A setup.

Someone was not stealing from Nicholas.

Someone was trying to destroy him.

When Nicholas returned, Emma immediately saw the difference.

He looked colder.

More distant.

“Did you find Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Nicholas removed his coat.

“He wants a war.”

Emma studied him.

“You don’t seem surprised.”

“I’m not.”

“Why?”

“Because this was always coming.”

She walked closer.

“What does that mean?”

Nicholas looked at her.

“My entire life.”

A pause.

“Everything I built.”

“Everything I changed.”

“It was all leading back to this.”

Emma hated the way he said it.

Like he had already accepted losing.

“You’re giving up.”

Nicholas looked surprised.

“No.”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“You’re preparing yourself for pain.”

Silence.

“Those are different things.”

Nicholas looked away.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

Emma stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.”

His eyes met hers.

“You think because bad things happened before, they have to happen again.”

A pause.

“But that’s not how life works.”

Nicholas stared.

Emma continued.

“You’re not your father.”

The words hit harder than any weapon.

Because that was the battle Nicholas had been fighting his entire life.

Not against enemies.

Against his own name.

That evening, the Carver board turned against him.

The headlines spread quickly.

Investors panicked.

Stock prices dropped.

Executives demanded answers.

The company that Nicholas built began collapsing.

Not because of a financial mistake.

Because someone had carefully designed the illusion of one.

At the emergency board meeting, the chairman stood.

“Mr. Carver, the board believes temporary removal may be necessary.”

The room went silent.

Nicholas looked around.

Twenty years ago, he would have destroyed them.

Today, he simply listened.

“Who is proposing this?”

The chairman hesitated.

“Major investors.”

“Names.”

Silence.

Nicholas smiled faintly.

“Exactly.”

Nobody moved.

Because everyone knew.

The attack was coming from the shadows.

After the meeting, Emma found Nicholas alone.

“You’re losing everything.”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

“You’re calm.”

“I’ve lost things before.”

She frowned.

“That doesn’t make it okay.”

“No.”

A pause.

“It just makes it familiar.”

Emma looked at him.

“You know what your problem is?”

Nicholas almost smiled.

“You have many opinions about my problems.”

“Someone has to.”

That actually made him smile.

Briefly.

Then he became serious again.

“What is my problem?”

“You think losing everything makes you less valuable.”

Silence.

“You think the company is who you are.”

Emma stepped closer.

“It’s not.”

Nicholas looked at her.

“Then what am I?”

The question was quiet.

Almost vulnerable.

Emma answered honestly.

“A man who saved my life.”

A pause.

“A man who protects people even when nobody sees.”

Another pause.

“A man who deserves someone fighting for him too.”

Nicholas did not know what to say.

Because nobody had ever said that.

Not once.

Everyone wanted something from him.

Money.

Power.

Protection.

But Emma wanted him.

Not his empire.

Not his name.

Him.

That night, the attack came.

Not against Carver International.

Against the estate.

The alarms sounded at 2:17 a.m.

David entered Nicholas’ room.

“Security breach.”

Nicholas immediately stood.

“Emma?”

“Safe room.”

Relief.

Then anger.

“How many?”

“Unknown.”

Nicholas grabbed his weapon.

David stopped him.

“Wait.”

Nicholas looked at him.

“You’re not going.”

“Why?”

“Because they want you angry.”

A pause.

“They want you to make a mistake.”

Nicholas understood.

Adrian.

This was not an attack.

It was a message.

Then Emma’s voice came through the security system.

“Nicholas.”

He froze.

Her voice.

“Emma?”

“I know who they’re after.”

Silence.

“What?”

She looked at the camera.

“They’re not trying to destroy your company.”

Nicholas listened.

“They’re trying to make you choose.”

“Choose what?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your empire.”

Another pause.

“Or me.”

Everything stopped.

Because that was the truth.

Adrian knew.

The company.

The money.

The reputation.

None of it mattered.

The only thing that could break Nicholas Carver…

Was making him choose between the world he built…

And the woman who made him want to leave it behind.

At dawn, the attackers disappeared.

No casualties.

No explanation.

Only one message left behind.

Written on the wall outside Nicholas’ office.

EVERY KING HAS A CROWN.

EVERY KING HAS A WEAKNESS.

Nicholas stared at it.

Emma stood beside him.

“Are you afraid?”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

“Of losing?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Nicholas looked at her.

“Of becoming the man they want me to be.”

Emma reached for his hand.

The simple gesture shocked him.

Because Nicholas Carver had held weapons.

Signed billion-dollar deals.

Faced enemies.

But that small act of trust…

Terrified him more than anything.

That evening, Adrian watched the news.

The attack had failed.

Nicholas was still standing.

But Adrian smiled.

Because he had learned something important.

Nicholas was no longer fighting to protect an empire.

He was fighting to protect Emma.

And that meant Adrian finally had a way to defeat him.

He picked up his phone.

“Prepare the final move.”

Richard Voss looked uncertain.

“What final move?”

Adrian looked at the photograph of Emma.

“The one that ends Nicholas Carver.”

At the Carver estate, Nicholas stood beside Emma near the lake.

The city lights reflected on the water.

“I should tell you something.”

Emma looked at him.

“What?”

“If this gets worse…”

She interrupted.

“Don’t.”

He looked at her.

“Emma—”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I’m tired of people deciding when they leave.”

Silence.

“You protected me.”

A pause.

“Now let me choose.”

Nicholas stared.

“You choose?”

“Yes.”

“And what do you choose?”

Emma looked at him.

“To stay.”

For the first time in years…

Nicholas Carver felt something more frightening than danger.

Hope.

But neither of them knew…

May you like

The final battle had not started yet.

Because Adrian Black was about to reveal the one secret that could destroy everything Nicholas believed about his own family.
