Chapter 9 - The Return to Gold Coast

Three months later.

The grand penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan had been completely transformed.

The cold, sterile white marble and minimalist black furniture that Evelyn had insisted on were gone. In their place were warm hardwood floors, plush velvet sofas in deep navy, colorful framed artwork made by tiny four-year-old hands, and wooden toy chests tucked neatly into the living room corners.

The house of stone and silence was dead. In its place was a home filled with life, noise, and love.

It was a soft Sunday evening. The sun was setting over the lake, painting the skyline in deep shades of rose and orange.

In the master bedroom nursery, Mateo and Leo were fast asleep in their twin custom carved-oak beds, clutching their stuffed animals, drifting off after a long day at the lakefront park.

I stood in the doorway, watching their small chests rise and fall in the dim light of the nightlamp, feeling a peace so deep it brought a quiet tear to my eye.

A soft hand slipped into mine.

I turned my head. Nia was standing beside me, wearing an ivory silk robe, her cheek resting softly against my shoulder.

"They had a good day," she whispered gently.

"They have a good life," I corrected softly, turning around and wrapping my arms securely around her waist, pulling her close against my chest.

Nia looked up at me, reaching a hand up to trace the line of my jaw, her soft fingers resting against my cheek.

"I was so angry at you for so long, Luca," she admitted quietly, her hazel eyes searching mine. "I spent four years believing that you threw me away because I wasn't enough. I hated you for making me feel broken."

"I know," I murmured, leaning down until my forehead rested against hers. "And I will spend the next fifty years making sure you never feel that way again."

"I see the way you look at them, Luca," Nia whispered, a sweet, breathtaking smile spreading across her lips. "I see the way you look at me. You're not the man who left that kitchen four years ago. You're the man I fell in love with ten years ago... only better."

May you like

"I love you, Nia," I swore, my voice trembling with profound emotion. "I never stopped loving you. Not for a single day."

Nia reached up on her tiptoes and pressed her lips against mine in a deep, tender, passionate kiss that washed away four years of pain, heartbreak, and deceit, reuniting our souls in the quiet dusk.
