Chapter 5 - The First Embrace

Nia rushed to the base of the stairs, instantly kneeling down and extending her arms. "Mateo, baby, go back to your room with Leo, okay? Mommy will be right up to make oatmeal."
Little Mateo didn't move immediately. He held onto the wooden banister, his curious blue eyes locking directly onto mine. He didn't look scared. He looked... familiar. He tilted his head slightly to the left—that same damn habit I had had since I was a child.
"Is he the man from the restaurant?" Mateo asked softly.
I couldn't control myself anymore. I slowly sank down onto both knees right there on the hardwood floor of the entryway, dropping my heavy coat onto the ground beside me.
"Hi, Mateo," I whispered, my voice thick with tears, forcing a gentle smile onto my face despite the pain tearing through my soul.
Mateo looked down at me, then at his mother's tear-stained face. "Mommy, why are you crying? Is he mean?"
"No, sweetheart," Nia choked out, looking back and forth between us, her defense mechanisms crumbling beneath the weight of four years of hidden pain. "No... he's not mean."
"I'm... I'm an old friend of your mother's," I said, holding my breath, keeping my distance so as not to frighten him. "My name is Luca."
Just then, a second little head popped out from behind the doorframe at the top of the stairs. Leo. He was clutching a worn-out plush wolf under his arm, his hair just as wild as his brother's.
"Mateo! Come back! You're gonna wake up the dragons!" Leo shouted in a fierce, adorable whisper.
A wet laugh escaped Nia’s lips despite her tears. She looked up at the stairs, then turned her head slowly to look at me.
In her eyes, I didn't see hatred anymore. I saw a mother who had carried the crushing weight of an impossible secret for four long, lonely years—a woman who had raised two brilliant, beautiful boys in the shadows while watching her ex-husband live in luxury on the evening news.
"They were born two weeks early," Nia said softly, her voice barely audible over the ticking clock in the hall. "I was all alone in the delivery room at St. Joseph's. I almost called your private line ten times while I was in labor. But every time I picked up the phone, I remembered Evelyn's face on the cover of the society magazines. I thought... I thought you didn't want us."
I crawled across the wooden floor on my knees until I was sitting right at her feet. I reached out, my hands trembling violently, and took her soft, warm hands into mine.
"I have regretted that night every single second of my life, Nia," I sobbed openly, pressing her hands against my forehead. "I searched for you. I thought about you every night before I went to sleep. I lived in a house of stone and silence because I threw away the only real thing I ever had."
May you like
Nia didn't pull her hands away. A soft tear fell from her cheek, landing on the back of my hand.
"They look just like you, Luca," she whispered softly. "Every time I look at them... I see you."
