Chapter 10 - The Light in the Window

The evening settled softly over Manhattan, the city lights flickering on like a million small candles against the deep purple sky of the New York dusk.

Inside the brownstone on East 73rd Street, the large dining table was set for eight people. Old Mario from the Bronx sat at the far end, arguing good-naturedly with Elena’s sister about the correct way to season a roast chicken, while Vincent Kane allowed little Sofia to braid his short hair into ridiculous tiny ponytails.

Daniel sat in Gabriel’s lap at the head of the table, his small hand resting over Gabriel’s larger one as they watched Elena place a massive ceramic bowl of pasta in the center of the wood. She looked beautiful, the soft golden light of the chandelier catching the silver scar above her eye, making it shine like a permanent crescent moon.

"Everyone eat before it gets cold," Elena said, her voice warm, commanding the room with an effortless authority that required no weapons, no threats, and no fear.

Gabriel looked around the table—at his son, who was laughing; at the little girl who had become his daughter; at the hardened soldier who had become a brother; and at the woman who had stood in the dark with a broken stick to save his entire world.

He realized then that fear was not the ultimate language of the city. Fear was just a temporary silence created by men who didn't understand the light. The real language was this—the sound of children laughing in a safe room, the scent of fresh bread, the shared scars of survival, and the absolute, unbreakable certainty that no matter how dark the night became outside those windows...

The crew was assembled, the captain was home, and the light would always stay on.
