Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Five Families

The legal finality of the Moretti-Marcone war did not take place in a dark alley, but in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Two months after the attack at Lenox Hill, the federal government, utilizing the mountain of encrypted financial data Gabriel had extracted from his cousin’s corporate files, unsealed a massive RICO indictment against the remaining leadership of the Brooklyn syndicates.
Gabriel sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a perfectly tailored navy blue suit, his hands folded over his silver-headed cane. Beside him sat Elena, elegant in a simple dark green wool dress, her hair pinned back, her posture straight and proud.
At the defense table, Santino Marcone sat surrounded by a dozen high-priced lawyers, his hands shaking as the federal prosecutor played an audio recording obtained via a wiretap placed on his satellite phone the night of the hospital siege.
"Room 412 becomes a mausoleum..." the old man's recorded voice echoed through the courtroom, cold and incriminating.
The lead judge, an iron-willed magistrate named Judge Margaret Cho, leaned over her bench, looking at the defense team with absolute disdain. "The court finds that the evidence of attempted murder of a minor inside a medical facility is absolute. The motion for bail is denied. This trial will proceed with the defendants in high-security remand status."
As the marshals stood up to lead Santino away in chains, the old boss turned his head, his eyes locking onto Gabriel with a desperate, venomous hatred. "You think you won, Moretti? You broke the commission! You brought a janitor into the inner circle! You’ve ruined the traditions!"
Gabriel stood up slowly, stepping into the aisle so Santino had to face him directly as he was led past.

"The traditions didn't save my son, Santino," Gabriel said, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the silent courtroom. "The uniform you despised did. You built your empire on fear, old man. I built mine on loyalty. That’s why you’re going to die in a cage, and I’m going home to my family."
Elena reached out, her hand sliding into Gabriel's as they turned their backs on the court, walking together down the stone steps of the federal plaza into the bright New York sunshine.
