Chapter 5 – “The Choice Between Blood and Love”

The city had a way of sensing war before the first shot was fired.

Chicago changed.

People who normally filled restaurants and sidewalks suddenly looked over their shoulders.

Business meetings were canceled.

Old alliances shifted.

Phones that had been silent for years started ringing again.

Because everyone knew one thing:

When Lorenzo Moretti moved, something was coming.

And this time, everyone knew why.

A woman.

Not a business deal.

Not territory.

Not money.

A woman named Camila Williams.

Camila hated the attention.

She hated the cameras outside the Moretti mansion.

She hated the reporters asking questions she could not answer.

Most of all, she hated that strangers suddenly believed they knew her.

They called her:

The Lost Heiress.

The Daughter of the Kingpin.

The Woman Who Could Destroy Chicago’s Underworld.

But nobody called her what she had always been.

A chef.

A daughter.

A friend.

A woman who loved making desserts because sweetness had always been easier to understand than people.

She stood in the mansion kitchen staring at a bowl of chocolate batter.

The irony was not lost on her.

The most dangerous house in Chicago had the most expensive kitchen she had ever seen.

Marble counters.

Professional ovens.

Every ingredient imaginable.

And yet she missed her tiny apartment.

She missed Biscuit sleeping on her kitchen chair.

She missed her old mixer that made strange noises.

She missed being nobody.

“Thinking too loudly?”

Camila turned.

Lorenzo stood at the kitchen entrance.

No jacket.

No tie.

Just a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

For a moment, she forgot he was dangerous.

Then she remembered.

“Do you ever knock?”

“Not usually.”

“You should start.”

“Why?”

“Because normal people do.”

A faint smile appeared.

“I have never been accused of being normal.”

“No argument there.”

He walked closer.

His eyes moved to the bowl.

“You’re baking.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She shrugged.

“Because I’m stressed.”

“That’s your solution?”

“Yes.”

“It involves sugar?”

“Usually.”

He studied her.

“Does it work?”

She looked down.

“Sometimes.”

A quiet moment passed.

Then Lorenzo said something she did not expect.

“Can I help?”

Camila blinked.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“You’re offering to bake?”

“Yes.”

She almost laughed.

“The same man who has people terrified of him wants to make cookies?”

His expression remained serious.

“Yes.”

That somehow made it funnier.

She laughed.

Actually laughed.

And Lorenzo froze.

Because he rarely heard laughter around him.

Not real laughter.

Not the kind that came from happiness.

The sound changed his entire face.

“You like that?”

“What?”

“Making me look ridiculous.”

Camila smiled.

“Maybe.”

For a few seconds, they were not enemies’ children.

They were not a mafia boss and a target.

They were just two people in a kitchen.

And Lorenzo looked almost peaceful.

Almost.

The peace lasted ten minutes.

Then Matteo walked in.

The moment he saw Lorenzo holding a wooden spoon, he stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Camila covered her smile.

Matteo looked at his boss.

Then at the bowl.

Then back at Lorenzo.

“Should I come back later?”

“Yes,” Lorenzo said.

“No,” Camila answered at the same time.

Matteo looked confused.

“Interesting.”

Lorenzo gave him a warning look.

Matteo ignored it.

“We found something.”

The warmth disappeared from the room.

Camila noticed immediately.

Lorenzo became someone else.

The businessman.

The leader.

The man everyone feared.

“What?”

Matteo placed a folder on the counter.

“Victor Bellini wasn’t acting alone.”

Lorenzo opened it.

Camila watched his expression change.

“What is it?”

Lorenzo did not answer.

That worried her.

“Lorenzo.”

He looked at her.

“Your father left something behind.”

Her stomach tightened.

“What?”

“An account.”

“Money?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Matteo answered.

“Almost two hundred million dollars.”

Camila stared.

The number sounded impossible.

“That’s not mine.”

“It is legally tied to your identity,” Matteo said.

She shook her head.

“No.”

Lorenzo watched her carefully.

“You don’t want it.”

“I don’t need it.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“Then what is?”

His voice lowered.

“The people hunting you believe that money gives them power.”

Camila understood.

They did not care about her.

They cared about what she represented.

A key.

A fortune.

A legacy.

“I don’t want my father’s money.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Why?”

Because it was simple.

Because she knew herself.

“I don’t want something built from other people’s suffering.”

Silence.

Matteo looked away.

Lorenzo stared at her.

And something like pride crossed his face.

“You really are nothing like him.”

That evening, Camila received a phone call.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

But something made her answer.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then:

“Camila?”

Her entire body froze.

Because she recognized the voice.

Not because she knew it.

Because she had heard it before.

In old recordings.

Old messages.

Her mother’s forgotten files.

A voice from childhood.

“Dad?”

The word escaped before she could stop it.

The silence on the other end broke.

“Little bird…”

Her hand shook.

No.

Impossible.

Her father was dead.

“You’re not real.”

A quiet laugh.

“I wish I was.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“What do you want?”

“I want to see my daughter.”

“You died.”

“No.”

His voice became sad.

“I disappeared.”

She looked toward the door.

Lorenzo.

She needed him.

But she stayed silent.

“Why now?”

“Because they found you.”

Her heart stopped.

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

The voice became urgent.

“Camila, listen to me. You cannot trust Lorenzo Moretti.”

Her blood ran cold.

“Why?”

“Because his family destroyed mine.”

She closed her eyes.

“He says you destroyed his.”

Silence.

Then her father whispered:

“Lorenzo doesn’t know the truth.”

When the call ended, Camila could barely breathe.

Her entire life had become a puzzle.

And every person had a different version.

Her father was alive.

Lorenzo’s father was dead.

Someone was lying.

Maybe everyone was.

“Camila.”

She turned.

Lorenzo stood in the doorway.

She froze.

“How long were you there?”

“Long enough.”

Her heart sank.

“You heard?”

“Yes.”

She waited.

For anger.

For betrayal.

For rage.

Instead, Lorenzo looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

“You believe him?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know what I believe anymore.”

That answer seemed to wound him.

“I see.”

“No, Lorenzo.”

She stepped closer.

“I’m trying to understand.”

He looked away.

“Understanding is dangerous.”

“Why?”

“Because sometimes the truth destroys the things we care about.”

The words were quiet.

And honest.

“Do you think my father is alive?”

Lorenzo didn’t answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

“You do.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew there was a chance?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was trying to protect you.”

She laughed sadly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“But nobody asks what I want.”

That stopped him.

Camila looked directly into his eyes.

“I spent my entire life being told what was best for me.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“My mother hid things. My father disappeared. Now you hide things.”

Lorenzo looked devastated.

“I’m sorry.”

“I don’t want you to be sorry.”

“What do you want?”

She took a breath.

“The truth.”

A long silence.

Then Lorenzo nodded.

“Okay.”

She blinked.

“Okay?”

“I’ll give you the truth.”

He stepped closer.

“But I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“If Anthony Williams is alive…”

His voice became darker.

“He is not the father you remember.”

The next day, Lorenzo took Camila to an abandoned warehouse near the edge of the city.

She hated the location.

She hated the reason.

But she needed answers.

Inside waited someone she never expected to see.

Anthony Williams.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Camila stopped breathing.

Her father looked at her.

The man from childhood memories.

The man she had mourned.

The man she had imagined a thousand times.

“Camila.”

Her knees almost gave out.

“Dad?”

He stepped forward.

But Lorenzo immediately moved between them.

Anthony stopped.

And smiled sadly.

“You really do love her.”

The words made Lorenzo tense.

Camila looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Anthony looked at Lorenzo.

“You finally became something your father never was.”

“What?”

“A man capable of choosing love over power.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Anthony looked at Camila.

“I’m sorry.”

The apology broke something inside her.

“Why?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because everything bad that happened to you…”

He looked at Lorenzo.

“Started because of us.”

The truth was coming.

The real truth.

Not the stories.

Not the rumors.

Not the lies.

And Camila realized something terrifying:

She was not standing between two enemies.

She was standing between two broken men.

Two families.

Two generations of revenge.

May you like

And somehow…

She was the only person who could end it.
