Chapter 4 – “The War Behind Her Blood”

The sound of the door unlocking was louder than any gunshot Camila had ever heard.

Maybe because she knew what waited on the other side.

Maybe because, for the first time in her life, she understood what it felt like to be hunted.

Her entire body wanted to run.

Every instinct screamed at her to move, hide, escape.

But she couldn’t.

Not because she was fearless.

Because Lorenzo Moretti was standing in front of her.

And he wasn’t moving.

He wasn’t running.

He wasn’t even breathing differently.

He stood between her and the danger with the same calm expression he had worn in every room where everyone else was afraid of him.

Only now, Camila saw the truth.

The calm was not because he felt nothing.

It was because he felt everything and had learned how to control it.

“Lorenzo…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Without looking back, he answered.

“Stay behind me.”

“I can help.”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

Not angry.

Not dismissive.

Protective.

“I’m not helpless.”

“I know.”

“Then stop treating me like I am.”

For a second, something changed in his expression.

A small flash of pride.

“You really don’t understand how unusual you are.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

His eyes stayed on the door.

“It’s a warning.”

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

And three men stepped inside.

Camila recognized none of them.

But Lorenzo did.

That scared her more.

Because the expression that crossed his face was not surprise.

It was recognition.

The first man smiled.

Older.

Maybe sixty.

Silver hair.

Expensive coat.

A face that looked respectable.

The kind of man people would trust at a charity dinner.

The kind of man nobody would expect to be dangerous.

“Lorenzo Moretti.”

The man’s smile widened.

“I was wondering when you would finally figure it out.”

Lorenzo’s voice became colder.

“Victor Bellini.”

Camila looked between them.

The name meant nothing to her.

But Lorenzo’s reaction did.

He knew him.

And he hated him.

“You’re supposed to be dead,” Lorenzo said.

Victor laughed softly.

“So are many men in our world.”

The words made Camila’s stomach tighten.

Our world.

Not hers.

Not anymore.

Victor looked past Lorenzo.

And his eyes landed on Camila.

For the first time, she understood what it meant to be looked at like an object.

There was no curiosity.

No kindness.

No interest.

Only calculation.

“So this is her.”

Lorenzo moved slightly.

Blocking Victor’s view.

“Don’t.”

Victor smiled.

“Still protective.”

“She has nothing to do with you.”

“Oh, Lorenzo.”

Victor shook his head.

“You still don’t understand.”

His eyes moved toward Camila again.

“She has everything to do with me.”

Camila felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Victor said:

“Your father owed me something.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

“Enough.”

“No.”

Victor smiled.

“Let her hear.”

Camila looked at Lorenzo.

The silent conversation between them was obvious.

He wanted to stop this.

He wanted to protect her from every word.

But she was tired of being protected from the truth.

“What did my father owe him?”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Camila—”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

But she stood firm.

“I need to know.”

Victor smiled.

“Good.”

Lorenzo’s expression darkened.

“Careful.”

Victor ignored him.

“Your father was not just a criminal.”

Camila swallowed.

“Then what was he?”

Victor stepped closer.

“A king.”

The word sounded ridiculous.

Almost theatrical.

But nobody laughed.

“Anthony Williams controlled half of Chicago before Lorenzo’s family took everything from him.”

Camila looked at Lorenzo.

“Is that true?”

Silence.

And again, silence answered.

Her chest tightened.

“You knew?”

Lorenzo’s eyes softened.

“Not everything.”

“But enough.”

“Yes.”

The betrayal hurt.

More than she expected.

“You investigated me.”

“Yes.”

“Before you cared?”

His expression changed.

That question hit harder than any accusation.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“But you lied.”

“I was trying to find the safest way to tell you.”

“There is no safe way to tell someone their entire life is a lie.”

Lorenzo had no answer.

Because she was right.

Victor watched the exchange with satisfaction.

“Interesting.”

Nobody looked at him.

“You two are exactly what I expected.”

Camila turned.

“What does that mean?”

Victor smiled.

“Lorenzo always believed love made people weak.”

A pause.

“But now look at him.”

His gaze moved to Lorenzo.

“You’re willing to destroy yourself for her.”

Camila froze.

Love?

The word hung in the air.

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“Leave.”

Victor laughed.

“You still don’t see it.”

“Leave.”

“You think you’re protecting her.”

Victor stepped toward the door.

“But you’re actually the reason she’s in danger.”

The words stayed behind after he left.

The moment the door closed, Camila turned toward Lorenzo.

“You love me?”

The question was quiet.

Almost afraid.

Lorenzo did not answer.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“Lorenzo.”

He looked at her.

His eyes were tired.

Honest.

“I don’t know when it happened.”

Camila’s breath caught.

“But it did.”

He stepped closer.

“I have spent my entire life understanding enemies.”

His voice lowered.

“I know how to negotiate with them. How to defeat them. How to destroy them.”

Another step.

“But you…”

He stopped.

“You were the one thing I couldn’t control.”

Camila looked away.

Because hearing that from him was dangerous.

“You barely know me.”

“I know enough.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Yes.”

His answer was so certain she looked back.

“I know you apologize when someone bumps into you.”

She blinked.

“I know you pretend you’re not hurt when people make cruel comments.”

Her eyes softened.

“I know you sing quietly while you bake because you think nobody hears.”

Camila froze.

“You noticed that?”

“I notice everything about you.”

The honesty was overwhelming.

“I know you save the last piece of dessert for other people even when you want it.”

A small smile appeared.

“And I know you think being kind means being weak.”

His expression changed.

“But it’s the strongest thing about you.”

Camila felt tears forming.

She hated it.

She hated crying.

Especially in front of him.

“I’m angry with you.”

“I know.”

“You lied.”

“I know.”

“You scared me.”

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“And you’re still here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His answer came instantly.

“Because leaving would mean abandoning you.”

The tears fell before she could stop them.

Three days later, the Moretti mansion became Camila’s temporary prison.

Although Lorenzo refused to call it that.

“Protection,” he said.

“Prison with better furniture,” she replied.

For the first time, she saw something almost normal in him.

Amusement.

“You complain a lot.”

“I’m a chef. Complaining is part of the job.”

He almost smiled.

Almost.

But the tension between them remained.

Because the truth had changed everything.

Camila was not just a woman Lorenzo met at a dinner.

She was connected to a war.

A war that had existed before she was born.

And everyone wanted something from her.

Except Lorenzo.

At least, she hoped.

The fourth night at the mansion, Camila couldn’t sleep.

Too many thoughts.

Too many questions.

She wandered downstairs.

She found Lorenzo in the library.

Not working.

Not making calls.

Just sitting alone.

A glass untouched beside him.

That surprised her.

“You’re not drinking?”

He looked up.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want to become my father.”

Camila stopped.

Another piece of him.

Another secret.

“You never talk about him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

A long pause.

“Because the man I remember and the man he became were two different people.”

Camila sat across from him.

“My father was like that?”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt.

“He loved my mother.”

Camila listened.

“He protected his family.”

A pause.

“Then power changed him.”

She understood.

Because she had seen what power did.

It made people believe they were untouchable.

“What happened between your families?”

Lorenzo looked into the darkness.

“Your father killed mine.”

Silence.

Camila’s heart stopped.

“What?”

“He ordered it.”

She stared.

“And now I’m his daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And you still protect me?”

His eyes met hers.

“I told you.”

His voice softened.

“You are not him.”

That was the moment something inside Camila broke.

Because she realized Lorenzo was fighting a battle nobody knew about.

Not against Victor.

Not against enemies.

Against himself.

The next morning, the truth exploded.

Not through violence.

Not through guns.

Through the media.

Every news channel in Chicago showed the same headline.

MISSING HEIRESS OF UNDERGROUND EMPIRE DISCOVERED AFTER 28 YEARS

Camila stared at the screen.

Her face.

Her name.

Her life.

Displayed for the entire city.

The article claimed Anthony Williams had hidden his daughter to protect his legacy.

It claimed she had inherited access to millions.

It claimed she was the key to a forgotten empire.

She felt sick.

“I don’t have any empire.”

Lorenzo stood behind her.

“I know.”

“I don’t want this.”

“I know.”

“Then make it stop.”

His expression changed.

Because for the first time, she asked him for help.

Not protection.

Help.

“I will.”

“How?”

His eyes became cold.

“The only way people like this understand.”

Camila looked at him.

“Lorenzo…”

He picked up his jacket.

“I’m ending this.”

The fear returned.

“What does that mean?”

He looked at her.

“It means anyone who comes for you will have to come through me.”

And then he walked away.

Leaving Camila with one terrifying realization.

The entire city was preparing for war.

May you like

And Lorenzo Moretti was about to start one.

For her.
