Chapter 9 - The Ball at Blackwater

Six months later.

Blackwater House hosted the grandest summer ball the city had seen in fifty years.

Over three hundred guests filled the grand ballroom—not corrupt syndicate bosses or secretive conspirators, but honest business leaders, city officials, doctors, teachers, and families from the new Rowan-Vale Clinic.

The grand crystal chandeliers blazed with light, reflecting off polished white marble floors. Music from a live orchestra floated through the open French doors, carrying out into the rose gardens overlooking the illuminated bay.

In the center of the ballroom, Julianna Vale—wearing a stunning white lace dress—was dancing.

She wasn't in a wheelchair. She wasn't leaning on crutches. She was spinning around the floor with young friends from her new school, her cheeks flushed with rosy health, her laughter ringing out louder than the violins.

Clara stood near the balcony doors, watching the scene with a full heart.

She wore an exquisite emerald green silk gown that complimented her dark eyes and soft hair. She wore no extravagant diamonds—only a simple silver necklace featuring a delicate blue crystal bird pendant resting against her collarbone.

A warm hand slipped gently around her waist from behind.

Adrian stood beside her, looking breathtakingly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. He rested his chin lightly against her shoulder, looking out at their home filled with life and music.

“She hasn't stopped dancing for two hours,” Adrian murmured softly in her ear. “The doctors say her leg strength is almost completely normal now.”

“I know,” Clara smiled, leaning back against his chest. “She tried to challenge Marcus to a footrace in the hallway before the guests arrived.”

Adrian chuckled softly, a deep, rich sound that vibrated against her back. He turned her gently in his arms so she was facing him.

“You look beautiful tonight, Clara,” he said, his gaze searching her face with boundless devotion.

“I still feel a bit like the maid who dropped a tray of champagne,” Clara admitted with a soft, nervous chuckle.

“You were never just a maid,” Adrian said firmly, taking both her hands into his. “You were the heart this house was waiting for.”

He reached into his breast pocket and produced a small velvet box—much like the one he had given her months ago, but smaller.

He dropped gracefully down onto one knee in front of the balcony doors, right there in front of the entire ballroom.

The music stopped. The guests gasped softly, turning to watch.

Julianna ran over, clapping her hands in pure delight, standing beside her father with a giant grin on her face.

Adrian looked up at Clara, his grey eyes shining with absolute love.

“Clara Rowan,” Adrian said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent hall. “You walked into a house of shadow and brought the dawn. You healed my daughter, you saved my soul, and you showed me what it truly means to love. Will you marry me, and be the mistress of Blackwater House forever?”

Clara’s heart overflowed with pure, unadulterated joy. She looked at Julianna, who was nodding eagerly, then down at Adrian—the man who had transformed from a feared mafia boss into the gentlest, most devoted partner she could ever dream of.

“Yes,” Clara whispered, tears of happiness sparkling in her eyes. “Yes, Adrian! A thousand times, yes!”

Adrian stood up, slipped a flawless diamond ring onto her finger, and pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply as the entire ballroom erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.
