Chapter 7 - THE TACTICAL SURRENDER

The heavy impact echoed through the hallway like a crack of thunder.
The intruder let out a choked groan, his knees buckling as the explosive charge slipped from his fingers and clattered harmlessly against the floorboards. He spun around, dazed, blood leaking from beneath his mask, his sidearm rising toward Emma.
Emma didn't pull back. She slammed the nozzle of the fire extinguisher directly into his face, squeezing the trigger mechanism simultaneously.
A blinding, freezing cloud of white chemical powder erupted into the man's eyes and throat.
The intruder screamed, blinded and choking, dropping his weapon as he stumbled backward toward the nursery railing.
Before he could recover, a dark shape blurred across the hallway.
Gabriel materialized like a vengeful demon out of the haze of white powder. He grabbed the intruder by his tactical vest, drove him violently against the oak wall, and slammed his forehead into the man's nose with a sickening crunch.
The intruder went completely limp, dropping to the floor like a sack of wet flour.
Gabriel stood over the unconscious man, his chest heaving, his face covered in gunsmoke residue and sweat. In his right hand, his sidearm was aimed directly at the intruder’s head.
Then Gabriel turned his head and saw Emma.
She was standing in the doorway of the safe room, holding the empty fire extinguisher, her hair covered in white chemical dust, her cardigan torn at the shoulder, her green eyes wide and wild with protective fury.
Behind her, through the open safe room door, Lily and Sophia were peeking out from behind the sofa, completely unharmed.
Gabriel dropped his weapon into its holster.
He crossed the hallway in two massive strides, pulling Emma into his arms with a force that nearly lifted her off her feet. He buried his face in her neck, breathing in her scent, his broad frame shaking with a terrifying, raw emotion he could no longer control.
"You're safe," Gabriel choked out, his hands gripping her waist so tightly his knuckles turned white. "My God, Emma... you're safe."
Emma dropped the fire extinguisher, her arms wrapping around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder as the adrenaline finally left her body, leaving her trembling violently.
"They tried to take them, Gabriel," she wept softly into his coat. "They had the blueprints..."
"It’s over," Gabriel whispered fiercely, kissing her neck, her cheek, her forehead again and again. "It’s over. I have the house."
Marco came sprinting up the service stairs, followed by three guards, their weapons at the ready. He stopped dead in his tracks, taking in the scene: the unconscious Falcone enforcer, the white powder covering the hall, and Gabriel Moretti holding the former maid in a desperate, fiercely protective embrace in front of his unharmed children.
Marco cleared his throat, lowering his weapon. "The perimeter is secure, boss. Four Falcone men captured alive. The rest fled. And we found the man who gave them the codes."
Gabriel pulled back slightly from Emma, though his hand remained firmly anchored on her waist. His eyes turned into cold black ice. "Where is Hale?"
"We caught him trying to cross the river in a private launch three miles north," Marco reported. "He’s in the basement holding room at the docks."
Gabriel looked at Emma. His face softened for a fraction of a second as he touched her cheek. "Stay with the girls. Marco will post four men at this door."
Emma looked into his eyes, seeing the dark judgment waiting for the man who had betrayed his family. "Gabriel... don't become the monster they think you are."
Gabriel stared at her. For three years, no one had dared to offer him moral counsel. No one had dared to tell Gabriel Moretti how to handle a traitor.

He reached up, gently brushing a fleck of white powder from her cheek.
"I won't," Gabriel said softly. "Because the man who returns to this room tonight is the man you brought back to life."
