Chapter 6 - THE PERIMETER BREACH

The wail of the estate’s defense alarms shattered the night, cutting through the peaceful quiet of the mansion like a saw through bone.
Inside the upper hallway, Gabriel moved with terrifying efficiency. He racked the slide of his weapon, chambering a round, his dark eyes scanning the landing.
"Take the girls to the safe room behind the nursery," Gabriel ordered Emma, his voice absolute steel. "Do not open the door for anyone except me or Marco."
"Gabriel, what about you?!" Emma shouted over the rising sound of gunfire outside the courtyard windows.
"I am going to end this," Gabriel said coldly. He grabbed her face in his hands, pressing a hard, fierce kiss to her forehead. "Go! Now!"
Emma didn't hesitate. She turned and ran toward the nursery.
Inside, the twins were already awake, terrified by the flashing red security lights and the booming concussions outside. Sophia was crying in her crib, while Lily was sitting up, clutching her right leg, her small face pale with fright.
"Emma!" Sophia shrieked.
"I'm here! I'm right here!" Emma called out, scooping both toddlers into her arms simultaneously. She ignored the strain in her back, relying on pure adrenaline, and carried them toward the rear wall of the nursery.
She pressed her thumb against a discreet biometric scanner hidden behind a framed watercolor painting. The oak paneling clicked open, revealing a reinforced steel door leading into a high-tech panic room fitted with independent air filtration, communications, and medical supplies.
Emma carried the girls inside, slamming the steel door shut and engaging the mechanical deadbolts.
Inside the safe room, the sound of gunfire was muffled into a dull, rhythmic thud. Emma set the girls down on a plush sofa, pulling a warm blanket over their shoulders.
"Is the monster outside?" Sophia whimpered, holding her brown rabbit tightly.
"No monsters, sweetie," Emma lied smoothly, dropping to her knees and holding both of their hands. "Just a storm. Your father is outside turning off the thunder."
She pulled her phone from her pocket. The screen showed a private live camera feed connected to the safe room’s internal monitor system.
On the screen, Gabriel was moving through the ground-floor gallery alongside four heavily armed security officers. His posture was lethal, precise, and completely devoid of fear. He moved like a shadow, engaging three masked intruders who had breached the sunroom doors.
Emma watched in breathless horror as Gabriel fired three controlled rounds, dropping two attackers instantly before moving behind a marble pillar to reload.
Suddenly, another camera angle flickered on the screen.
In the secondary hallway near the kitchen, a man in a tactical vest—his face covered by a dark balaclava—was moving rapidly toward the service stairs. In his hand, he carried a heavy breaching charge.
He wasn't trying to loot the house. He was heading straight for the children's wing.
Emma’s blood turned to ice. Jonathan Hale.
Hale hadn't just filed a complaint with Child Welfare. When that failed, he had sold the estate’s security blueprints to the Falcone family—Gabriel’s fiercest territorial rivals—giving them the exact layout of the house and the location of the children’s wing.
The intruder on the screen reached the top of the service stairs. He kicked open the nursery door—the empty nursery where Emma and the twins had been two minutes earlier.
Emma watched the monitor as the man realized the room was empty. He cursed, his eyes scanning the walls until they stopped on the watercolor painting covering the biometric scanner.
He walked toward it, pulling a shaped explosive charge from his vest.
Inside the safe room, Lily began to cry softly. "Emma... I hear boots."
Emma looked at the steel door. The reinforced steel could withstand small arms fire, but a military-grade shaped charge placed directly against the lock mechanism would blow the door inward, filling the safe room with shrapnel and toxic gas.
She looked at the twins.
She looked at the heavy brass fire extinguisher mounted on the wall beside the emergency kit.
"Lily, Sophia," Emma whispered, her voice dead calm. "Listen to me very carefully. I want you to climb behind this sofa and cover your ears. Do not make a sound until your father opens this door. Do you understand?"
"Emma, don't go," Lily begged, her tiny fingers catching the sleeve of Emma’s cardigan.
Emma leaned down and kissed both of their cheeks. "I am going to make sure the storm stays outside."
Emma picked up the heavy fire extinguisher. She quietly disengaged the secondary deadbolt of the safe room door, pulling it open just three inches.
Through the crack, she saw the intruder standing three feet away, his back turned to her, peeling the adhesive backing off a plastic explosive charge, preparing to stick it to the door frame.

Emma didn't hesitate. She didn't call out. She didn't warn him.
She yanked the steel door open and swung the heavy metal fire extinguisher with all the strength in her body, striking the intruder squarely across the side of his tactical helmet.
