Chapter 9 - Shadows on the Hudson

By late November, the first heavy snows of winter had begun to blanket the rolling hills of New Jersey, turning the Marchetti estate into a postcard of white and gray against the dark, freezing waters of the Hudson River.

Inside the grand dining room, the crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, sparkling light over a long mahogany table set for two.

Sienna sat across from Dante, dressed in an emerald-green velvet dress that hugged her slender frame, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. The bruise on her face had completely faded, replaced by the natural glow of health and restored confidence.

"Silas tells me the port authority audit went well," Sienna said, cutting a piece of roasted duck on her plate. "The federal inspectors found nothing."

"Federal inspectors are remarkably compliant when they realize their mortgage fraud files have been misplaced," Dante replied dryly, taking a sip of Barolo wine.

"You blackmailed them, didn't you?"

"I motivated them to look closer at their own paperwork," Dante corrected with a faint smirk. "Politics in this city is just another form of chess, Sienna. Once you know what pieces your opponent is afraid of losing, the game is already over."

"And what piece are you afraid of losing, Dante?" she asked, her dark eyes locking onto his with sudden, quiet seriousness.

The room grew very still. The sound of the wind howling against the tall glass windows faded into the background.

Dante set his wine glass down very slowly. He looked across the table at her—really looked at her—not as an employee, not as a rescued victim, but as an equal.

"For thirty-four years, I built a fortress of stone and violence," Dante said, his voice deep and steady. "I believed that if you let no one in, no one could ever hurt you. I thought power was the only currency that mattered in this city."

He stood up from his chair, walked around the long mahogany table, and stopped beside her chair. He extended his hand, palm up.

Sienna placed her hand in his without hesitation. He pulled her gently to her feet, bringing her close against his chest.

"Then I found a girl crying in my kitchen at three in the morning," Dante murmured against her hair, his breath warm against her temple. "A girl who was scrubbing blood off floors to pay for a ghost's medical bills, while the men who served under my name preyed on her weakness."

He tilted her chin up, forcing her to look into his eyes.

"You broke through every wall I spent my life building, Sienna," Dante said, his voice fierce and tender all at once. "You are the only person in this city who isn't afraid of who I am. And God help me, I will burn New Jersey to the ground before I ever let anyone lay a hand on you again."

May you like

She didn't answer with words. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulled him down, and pressed her lips against his.

The kiss was fierce, desperate, and filled with all the unspoken history of two broken people who had found sanctuary in the dark.
