Chapter 9 - The Crimson Sunrise

The return to the Long Island estate was marked by a quiet, exhausting peace. The armored cars drove through the main gates just as the first light of dawn began to crack the eastern horizon, painting the waters of the Sound in brilliant streaks of crimson and gold.
Elena walked through the front doors, her shoes clicking softly on the marble floor. The house was silent, warm, smelling of the lavender wood polish Nora had used the afternoon before.
She walked up the grand staircase to the master bedroom. When she pushed the door open, her heart melted at the sight.
Dominic’s massive king-sized bed was completely occupied. Lucia lay on the left side, her arms wrapped around a large pillows; Valentina was in the middle, her legs kicked out sideways; and Mia was curled into a tiny ball at the foot of the bed, her small thumb tucked into her mouth as she breathed rhythmically. Nora was asleep in the armchair by the window, a book open on her lap.
Dominic entered behind Elena, his tie completely removed, his jacket draped over his arm. He looked at his daughters, a look of unadulterated, protective tenderness crossing his rugged features.
"We need a bigger bed," he whispered, a soft laugh vibrating in his chest.
"We need a bigger house if they keep growing like this," Elena smiled, walking over to gently wake her mother. "Mom, go to your room. We're back. Everything is fine."
Nora blinked, looking up with a sleepy smile. "The Valentis?"
"They're on their way back to Chicago," Dominic said, helping the older woman up from the chair. "They won't be coming back."
Once Nora had slipped out of the room, Dominic and Elena changed out of their formal clothes into comfortable linen sheets. They climbed into the bed, carefully navigating around the sleeping bodies of their three daughters.
Mia instantly stirred at the movement, her hazel eyes fluttering open. She blinked in the dim morning light, saw Dominic, and let out a tiny, contented sigh. She crawled over Valentina’s legs, dragging her plush bear behind her, until she could rest her head directly against Dominic’s chest, her small hand reaching out to grab Elena’s fingers.
"Papa," Mia mumbled, her voice thick with sleep. "Mom."
Dominic wrapped his massive arm around both Elena and the little girl, pulling them close against his side. The crimson sunrise was pouring through the balcony windows now, illuminating the room in a warm, protective glow.
"I'm here, sweet girl," Dominic murmured, his voice thick with an emotion he no longer tried to hide. "We're both here."

Elena looked across the bed at Lucia and Valentina, who were starting to wake up, their faces bright with the realization that the night had passed and their parents were safe. She felt the weight of the diamond ring on her finger—no longer a symbol of an empire's burden, but the anchor of a beautiful, unbreakable family.
The monsters were truly gone, the ledger was clean, and the future before them was wide open.
