Chapter 7 - The New Jersey Gambit

By Wednesday afternoon, the financial shockwaves from Elena's strategy had rippled through the eastern seaboard. The Marcone family’s primary laundering operation in Newark had been raided by federal agents—not because Dominic had turned informant, but because Elena had anonymously leaked a series of highly specific, contradictory customs manifests that forced the IRS to freeze the accounts for an audit.

The result was instantaneous. The Marcone family was paralyzed, their payroll suspended, their street crews refusing to move without their weekly cash envelopes.

In the living room of the Long Island estate, the atmosphere was peaceful, almost domestic, despite the financial war raging across the state lines. Elena sat on the large velvet sofa, Lucia and Valentina beside her, helping them with their remote-learning history curriculum. Mia was on the rug at their feet, meticulously building a tower out of colored plastic blocks.

"Look, Mom!" Mia shouted, pointing at her creation. "High tower! Like the chapel!"

Elena felt a tiny pang in her heart at the reference, but she smiled warmly, leaning down to pat Mia's head. "It's beautiful, Mia. Just make sure it doesn't fall on your shoes."

The phone on the side table rang—a dedicated line that only Dominic and Marcus used. Elena picked it up, her posture instantly shifting into professional alertness.

"Elena," Dominic’s voice came through, sounding strained, the background noise filled with the roar of a helicopter engine. "Vittorio Valenti just called my personal line. He knows about the Marcone freeze. He knows it was you."

"Is he conceding?" she asked, her hand tightening on the receiver.

"He wants a sit-down," Dominic said. "Tonight. Neutral ground. A private hangar at Teterboro Airport. He’s flying in from Chicago with his senior advisors. He said he wants to sign the asset transfer papers personally, but he has one condition."

"What condition?"

"He wants you there, Elena," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a dark, protective tone. "He wants to see the woman who broke his family's back without firing a single shot. I told him no, but—"

"I'm coming, Dominic," Elena interrupted, standing up from the couch. Lucia looked up at her, her blue eyes filled with sudden concern. Elena gave her daughter a reassuring nod, stepping out into the hallway for privacy. "If I don't go, he’ll think we're afraid. He’ll think you're protecting a weakness. We need to show him that I am the new strength of this family."

A long silence followed on the line, the sound of the helicopter blades thrumming through the speaker. Finally, Dominic let out a heavy sigh. "The armored transport will be at the front door in twenty minutes. Marcus will escort you. If Vittorio so much as looks at you wrong, Elena... the airport becomes a graveyard."

"I'll be ready in ten," she said, hanging up the phone.

She walked back into the living room, kneeling before her daughters. "Lucia, I have to go into the city with your father for a business meeting. Your grandmother Nora is in the kitchen. I want you to be the big sister tonight. Watch Valentina and Mia until we get back."

Lucia looked at Elena for a long moment, then reached out to adjust the collar of Elena's sweater. "Wear the ring, Mom. The one Papa gave you. Let them see who you are."

Elena smiled, a tear blurring her vision as she kissed the girl's forehead. "I'm wearing it, sweet girl. I'm never taking it off."
