Chapter 4 - The Masquerade Trap

The Grand Ballroom of the Harbor Light Hotel was a sea of black ties, glittering floor-length gowns, and ornate silk masks. Champagne flowed from ice sculptures, and a live string quartet played soft classical music near the marble balcony overlooking the Hudson River.

Dominic Hale walked through the crowd like a king surveying his territory. Flanked by four silent, imposing bodyguards, he moved through the room, accepting respectful nods from union leaders and city councilmen.

In the corner of the VIP lounge, Marcus Vance sat at a small glass table, nursing a tumbler of aged scotch. Marcus was fifty, with thinning grey hair, gold-rimmed spectacles, and the soft, nervous demeanor of a lifelong corporate accountant.

Dominic walked over, pulling out a leather armchair and sitting across from Marcus without an invitation.

"Marcus," Dominic said smoothly, signaling a waiter for a bourbon. "You look tense tonight."

Marcus swallowed hard, adjusting his gold cufflinks with trembling fingers. "It’s... it’s just the workload, Boss. Closing the quarterly shipping ledgers for the West Docks has been stressful."

"Ah, yes. The West Docks," Dominic mused, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Speaking of shipping ledgers, Marcus, I noticed an unusual transaction this morning. A wire transfer of two million dollars routed through a shell company in the Caymans."

Marcus froze. The glass of scotch in his hand wobbled violently, spilling a few drops onto the crisp white tablecloth.

"I... I'm sure there’s a rational explanation for that, Dominic," Marcus stammered, his face turning an unhealthy shade of grey. "A clerical error by the offshore bank..."

"Don't embarrass yourself, Marcus," Dominic interrupted, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that barely carried over the string quartet. "The account was authorized using your private cryptographic key. The same key you used to wipe seven minutes of security footage outside my son's nursery two nights ago."

Marcus dropped his glass. It shattered against the table, amber liquor pooling across the linen.

"Dominic... please..." Marcus gasped, leaning forward, his eyes wide with sheer terror. "They forced me! Carmine Moretti... he threatened my family in Florida! He said if I didn't give Julianna the security codes, he'd kill my daughter!"

Dominic didn't flinch. "Julianna didn't just want access to the house, Marcus. She put organophosphate neurotoxin in Eli's formula."

Marcus’s jaw dropped. "What? No! Julianna told me she was only going to plant listening devices! She said she wanted evidence of your illegal shipping routes so the Morettis could sue for full custody of the boy!"

Dominic leaned across the table, his icy blue eyes pinning Marcus like a butterfly on a board. "You sold out my son to the people who murdered his mother."

"Evelyn?" Marcus gasped, blinking in confusion. "What do you mean? Evelyn died of complications during childbirth!"

Dominic pulled a small black recorder from his pocket, setting it on the table between them.

"Ten minutes ago," Dominic said coldly, "my men in Brooklyn intercepted Carmine Moretti’s personal physician. He admitted under interrogation that three years ago, Carmine ordered him to induce Evelyn’s labor prematurely using unregulated hormones—specifically so she would die before she could sign her father's estate over to me."

Marcus covered his mouth with both hands, tears of horror welling behind his spectacles. "My God... Carmine killed his own niece..."

"And now," Dominic said, standing up and towering over the broken accountant, "you are going to help me finish Carmine Moretti once and for all. Or I will turn you over to Victor, and you won't survive until midnight."

"Anything! I'll do anything!" Marcus wept softly, clutching Dominic’s sleeve. "What do you want me to do?"

"Call Julianna right now," Dominic ordered, handing Marcus his encrypted phone. "Tell her the plan at the hotel was successful. Tell her to proceed to the nursery."

Marcus took the phone with shaking hands, dialing the number.

In the quiet library of the Long Island estate, Julianna’s phone buzzed on the mahogany desk.

She picked it up immediately. "Marcus? Is it done?"

"It's done, Julianna," Marcus said into the phone, his voice trembling under Dominic’s lethal stare. "Dominic is occupied with the harbor commissioners. The estate security is lowered. You can move."

May you like

"Excellent," Julianna sneered over the line. "I'll make sure the baker girl takes the blame."

Julianna hung up the phone, a cruel, triumphant smile spreading across her face. She reached into her clutch bag, pulling out a small glass vial filled with a clear liquid, and walked purposefully toward the grand staircase leading to the nursery.
