Chapter 2 - The Silent Protocol

The rain began at midnight, pouring over the Long Island estate in heavy, relentless sheets that washed against the high stained-glass windows of the master library.
Inside the library, the fire in the stone hearth crackled softly, throwing warm orange light across the leather-bound books and dark mahogany panels. Dominic sat at his massive desk, three encrypted laptops open before him, while Victor stood at attention near the doorway, holding a black tablet displaying internal security logs.
Claire sat on the velvet sofa in the corner, holding Eli against her chest as the baby slumbered peacefully after his late-night feeding.
"Marcus Vance's financial records," Dominic said, turning one laptop toward Victor. "Look at the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Three days ago—the exact afternoon Julianna arrived at the estate—a wire transfer of two million dollars was deposited into Marcus’s shell company from a bank in Palermo controlled by Carmine Moretti."
Victor’s face hardened. "Marcus sold us out. He’s been your chief financial officer for eight years, Boss."
"Marcus was Evelyn's father's accountant before he came to me," Dominic replied, his voice devoid of emotion. "His loyalty was never to the Hale family; it was to the money. He used his admin privileges to erase those seven minutes of footage outside the nursery while Victor was running the midnight perimeter perimeter walk."
"Give the order, Boss," Victor said quietly, reaching beneath his jacket toward his holster. "I'll take care of Marcus and Julianna before dawn."
"No," Dominic commanded, raising a hand. "If Marcus or Julianna disappear tonight, Carmine Moretti will know the plot has been compromised. He commands three hundred armed soldiers in Brooklyn and Queens. If he knows we have proof of attempted murder, he will launch an all-out turf war before I can secure my shipping routes."
Claire looked up from Eli, her brown eyes clear and resolute. "Dominic is right. We need them to feel completely safe until they expose themselves publicly."
Dominic turned his chair toward Claire, studying her in the firelight. For weeks, he had seen her as a gentle, compassionate woman who possessed an extraordinary, healing gift with his son. But over the last twenty-four hours, he was seeing something else: a woman of quiet, unbreakable steel, who stood unbothered in the center of a deadly mob war.
"What do you suggest, Claire?" Dominic asked softly.
"Replace the two poisoned cans in the nursery cabinet with two fresh, safe cans from the pantry," Claire proposed, her voice calm and practical. "Mark the fresh cans with identical blue lines. If Julianna or Marcus check the cabinet tomorrow, they will see the blue lines and assume their poisoned containers are still sitting in place, waiting for me to use them."
Dominic stared at her for a long moment before a low, approving chuckle escaped his throat.
"You have the mind of a general, Claire Bennett," Dominic said, his blue eyes warm with an intensity that made Claire’s heart skip a beat.
"I managed a bakery in Queens for six years, Dominic," Claire replied, a faint smile touching her lips. "You'd be surprised how much tactical strategy it takes to deal with health inspectors and late delivery trucks."
Dominic stood up, walking across the carpet to stand beside the sofa. He leaned down, looking down at his sleeping son, then raised his gaze to meet Claire's.
"Tomorrow night at the Harbor Light Hotel," Dominic said gently, "I want you and Eli transported to my private safehouse in Upstate New York under heavy guard. Once I confront Marcus and Julianna at the gala, the city will become dangerous."
Claire shook her head instantly. "No."
Dominic frowned. "Claire, it's for your safety."
"If I leave the estate with Eli tomorrow afternoon, Julianna will know something is wrong," Claire argued, standing up while keeping Eli nestled against her shoulder. "She knows I never leave Eli during his evening feeding routine. If I vanish, she'll call Marcus, Marcus will call Carmine Moretti, and your trap at the hotel will fail."
"I will not put you in the line of fire!" Dominic snapped, his tone shifting into the sharp, authoritative command that usually terrified his subordinates.
"I am already in the line of fire, Dominic!" Claire matched his tone, stepping directly into his space without a trace of fear. "Someone put poison in the room where I feed this baby! I am not running away to some safehouse while you handle it alone. I stay here, at the estate, keeping up appearances until you give the signal from the hotel."
Dominic glared down at her, his broad chest rising and falling heavily. For five long seconds, the room was so quiet only the crackle of the fireplace and the sound of the rain against the glass could be heard.
Slowly, the anger in Dominic’s face dissolved, replaced by a deep, profound respect.
"You are the most stubborn woman I have ever met," Dominic whispered, reaching out to cup the back of her neck with his large palm, his thumb resting gently against her jaw.
"I've been told that before," Claire whispered back, her breath catching as Dominic’s thumb brushed softly against her skin.
"If you stay here tomorrow night," Dominic said, his voice dropping into an intimate, solemn pledge, "Victor will remain with you with ten of my best men. The moment I secure Marcus at the hotel, Victor will arrest Julianna here at the mansion."
May you like
"Agreed," Claire said softly.
Dominic leaned down, his forehead resting gently against hers for a fleeting second, his warm breath fanning across her lips. "Thank you, Claire. For everything."
