Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Aegis

The arrest of Victoria Lang sent shockwaves through the elite financial circles of Chicago and Wall Street, but Daniel Carter was far from finished.
Using the mountain of encrypted evidence retrieved from Victoria’s personal devices and her subsequent full confession to federal prosecutors in exchange for avoiding the death penalty, the Department of Justice launched a massive international raid against Aegis Global Holdings.
On Friday morning—the very day Daniel was supposed to attend his rehearsal dinner—federal agents and Interpol officers raided Aegis’s corporate headquarters in Manhattan and the Cayman Islands.
Julian Vance was arrested at his pent-house suite while preparing to board a private jet to Zurich.
His assets were frozen, his offshore accounts seized under the RICO Act, and his multi-billion-dollar investment firm collapsed into immediate bankruptcy within forty-eight hours.
Daniel sat in his corner office on the top floor of Carter Meridian Group’s headquarters in downtown Chicago, watching the live news coverage of Julian Vance being led out of his building in handcuffs by federal marshals.
The television screen flashed with bold headlines: "AEGIS GLOBAL COLLAPSES; BILLIONAIRE JULIAN VANCE CHARGED IN ATTEMPTED MURDER PLOT OF DANIEL CARTER."
A soft knock came at his office door.
Marcus Vance walked in, carrying a folder of closed case files.
“It’s over, Daniel,” Marcus said, pouring himself a cup of black coffee from the sideboard. “Julian’s legal team offered a full surrender. He’s looking at thirty years in federal prison without parole. Victoria took a plea deal for twenty-five years.”
Daniel looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the Chicago skyline shining under the crisp autumn sun.
“It’s strange, Marcus,” Daniel reflected softly. “For eighteen months, I thought I was building a life with someone who loved me. In reality, I was living in a stage play designed for my execution.”

“The important thing is you survived, Daniel,” Marcus said earnestly. “Not many men walk away from a trap that sophisticated.”
“I didn't survive because I was smart, Marcus,” Daniel admitted, turning to look his friend in the eye. “I survived because a six-year-old girl had the courage to tell the truth when everyone else was fooled by a pretty smile.”
