Chapter 10 - The Morning Sun

One year later.

The morning sun rose bright and clear over the Chicago suburbs, casting golden ribbons of light across the spotless quartz counters of Daniel Carter’s kitchen.

The house was quiet, peaceful, and filled with the warm, rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and hot buttermilk pancakes.

Daniel sat at the kitchen table, wearing a comfortable sweater, reading the morning news on his tablet. There were no poisoned toasts, no hidden vials, no whispers in the dark, and no predatory smiles.

The front door opened softly, and the cheerful sounds of laughter drifted down the hallway.

Maria and Annie stepped into the kitchen, carrying boxes of fresh pastries from the neighborhood bakery down the road. Annie was seven now, taller, vibrant, her face full of life and confidence.

“Good morning, Uncle Daniel!” Annie called out cheerfully, dropping her backpack by the door and running over to give him a big hug.

“Good morning, sunshine,” Daniel laughed, lifting her up easily and setting her on the chair beside him. “Did you bring the almond croissants?”

“Extra almond ones!” Annie declared proudly, pulling a pastry bag from the box.

Maria poured herself a cup of coffee, smiling warmly as she sat across from them. “The foundation board meeting is set for ten o'clock today, Daniel. We’re opening three new children’s shelters in South Chicago next month.”

“Wonderful,” Daniel smiled, taking a sip of his hot coffee.

He looked around his sunlit kitchen—at Maria, who had become like a trusted sister to him, and at Annie, the brilliant, brave little girl who had shattered a web of evil with four simple words: “Someone is poisoning you.”

Daniel picked up a warm croissant, took a bite, and smiled as the sweetness filled his senses.

He had built a fortune with discipline and caution, but he had found his true happiness through faith, truth, and love.
