Chapter 7 - Planting New Roots

The following weekend, the Hawthorne estate looked less like a corporate fortress and more like a community farm.

The immaculate, pristine front lawn—once the sacred symbol of Eleanor Hawthorne’s obsessive order—had been partially dug up. In its place, raised garden beds, flower boxes, and rows of vegetable patches were being installed under the cheerful supervision of Arthur Bennett himself.

Arthur, a distinguished man in his late sixties with kind eyes and silver hair, was laughing as he helped Leo shovel topsoil into a wooden frame.

Julian stood on the stone patio, holding a glass of iced tea, watching the scene with a deep, abiding sense of peace.

Clara walked up beside him, leaning against the patio railing. “You know half the neighbors on our street think you’ve lost your mind, right? Tearing up the front lawn for tomatoes?”

“Let them think what they want,” Julian chuckled, slipping his arm around her waist. “We’re feeding the local shelter with the harvest this season. Besides, the HOA president threatened to fine us, so I bought out his mortgage and turned his complaints into a zoning permit for community agriculture.”

Clara burst out laughing, elbowing him playfully in the ribs. “You didn't.”

“I totally did. Never underestimate the tactical advantage of financial restructuring when used for good.”

Across the yard, Ava ran over, holding up a remarkably muddy pair of gardening gloves with a triumphant grin. “Daddy! Look! I found a giant earthworm!”

Julian didn't flinch. He didn't check his clothes. He didn't worry about dirt touching his shoes.

He just smiled.

“Bring it here, Captain. Let’s see what kind of soil it likes best.”
