Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Files

By noon, Julian had locked himself in his study with the encrypted corporate archives connected to his private terminal.

The digital folders from fifteen years ago were heavily encrypted, requiring executive clearance levels that only he and his mother possessed. But Julian wasn't looking as the CEO of Mercer-Hawthorne anymore; he was looking as a man seeking the truth.

His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard. Screen after screen of financial spreadsheets, asset acquisitions, and liquidated partnership agreements scrolled past in a blur of green text.

Then he found it.

Project Horizon – Bennett Architectural & Engineering.

The file contained internal memos, hostile buyout proposals, and most damningly, a series of covert communications between Eleanor Hawthorne’s private legal counsel and a compromised board member inside Arthur Bennett’s firm. They had deliberately engineered a liquidity crisis to force Arthur into bankruptcy, allowing Mercer-Hawthorne to acquire his proprietary green-building patents for pennies on the dollar—patents that Julian’s own division had used to generate billions in sustainable real estate development over the past decade.

Julian slammed his hand against the mahogany desk, the sound echoing sharply through the empty study.

The empire he had spent his entire life defending, worshiping, and expanding wasn't just built on ambition—it was built on theft and ruin.

His phone buzzed on the desk. It was an incoming call from Marcus, his senior VP and head of legal operations.

“Julian,” Marcus’s voice came through the speaker, tight with urgency. “We have a massive problem. The board just received an emergency motion from Eleanor Hawthorne. She’s initiating a vote of no confidence to strip you of your CEO status, citing mental instability and breach of corporate fiduciary duty following the Merritt cancellation.”

Julian didn't flinch. The numbness he had felt for years was completely gone, replaced by a cold, searing fire of absolute resolve.

“Let her call the vote, Marcus,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

“Sir? If she succeeds, she takes full control of the voting shares. You’ll be pushed out completely.”

“Not if I release the corporate archives regarding Project Horizon to the federal prosecutor’s office and the financial press first,” Julian said quietly.

There was a dead, terrified silence on the other end of the line. “Julian... that will destroy the company’s valuation. It will implicate your mother directly in corporate fraud and extortion. You’ll wipe out billions in market cap.”

“Then let it burn down to the studs,” Julian said, his eyes fixed on the framed photograph of his three children playing in the mud on his desk. “Some foundations are rotten. You don't remodel them. You demolish them and start over.”
