Chapter 5 - The ReckoningThe boardroom on the 50th floor of the Whitmore Grand Tower in Manhattan was dead silent.

Vivienne Whitmore sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, flanked by her daughter Brooke and a team of high-powered defense attorneys. She looked impeccable in a black tailored suit, her expression a mask of supreme confidence, though her tightly clenched hands beneath the table betrayed her anxiety. Grant and Dr. Sterling were conspicuously absent, their phones turned off. Vivienne assumed Grant was still executing their backup plan.

The twelve members of the board of directors sat in uneasy silence, waiting for the meeting to begin.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Vivienne said, her voice echoing with artificial authority. "As you know, my husband’s sudden appearance at the gala has caused significant market volatility. While it was an emotional moment for us all, our medical experts assure us that Everett is suffering from a severe neurological delusion. He is unfit to manage his own affairs, let alone a multi-billion-dollar corporation. Therefore, we will proceed with the vote to finalize my appointment as Chairperson and CEO."

"I wouldn't call for that vote just yet, Vivienne," a voice boomed from the back of the room.

The double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Everett Whitmore walked in. He was dressed in a flawless charcoal suit, his posture straight, his stride long and commanding. He carried no cane, showed no weakness, and radiated the absolute authority of a man who owned the building they were sitting in.

Beside him walked Nora Hayes, carrying a sleek black briefcase, looking every bit the executive chief of staff. Behind them stood Marcus Vance and several security guards.

The board members gasped, several of them standing up instinctively out of sheer respect and shock.

"Everett!" Vivienne gasped, her confidence instantly shattering. "You... you shouldn't be here."

"This is my company, Vivienne. I am exactly where I belong," Everett said, walking directly to the head of the table. He didn't sit down; he stood, looking down at his wife. "Move out of my chair."

Vivienne’s lead lawyer stood up. "Mr. Whitmore, we have filed an emergency petition for temporary guardianship—"

"Your petition was denied thirty minutes ago by the New York State Supreme Court," Nora interrupted smoothly, stepping forward and sliding a certified legal document across the table. "Along with a comprehensive medical evaluation from the Chief of Neurology at Columbia University, confirming that Mr. Whitmore is in perfect mental and physical health."

Vivienne’s face turned gray. She looked at the door, waiting for Grant. "Where is my son?"

Everett gestured to Marcus Vance. The security doors opened, and two police detectives walked in, followed by Grant and Dr. Sterling, both in handcuffs, their faces downcast.

"Grant!" Brooke shrieked, jumping up from her chair.

"Your son and your doctor were arrested last night at my penthouse," Everett said, his voice echoing like thunder in the confined boardroom. "They were caught on security footage attempting to assassinate me and my assistant, Nora, with the same Swiss neuro-toxin you have been secretly purchasing for the last three years."

Nora opened the briefcase, pulling out stacks of financial documents and the Apex Helix files, laying them out before the board members. "Here are the bank transfers, signed by Vivienne Whitmore. Here is the chemical analysis of the medication administered to Mr. Whitmore during his 'recovery.' And here are the records of Grant Whitmore using company assets to secure illegal offshore loans."

The board members looked at the files, their expressions turning from shock to utter disgust. The lead board member, an older man named Arthur Pendelton, looked up at Vivienne with cold fury. "You poisoned the founder of this company? You embezzled our assets?"

"It’s a lie! It’s all a fabrication by this... this little maid!" Vivienne screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Nora. "She’s a gold-digger! She’s trying to steal our family fortune!"

"Nora Hayes has more honor in her little finger than your entire bloodline," Everett said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "Detectives, take them away."

The police moved forward, placing handcuffs on Vivienne and Brooke, who began to wail and scream as they were led out of the boardroom in front of the entire executive staff. Grant and Dr. Sterling followed closely behind.

The boardroom fell silent once more. Everett slowly sat down at the head of the table, the undisputed king of his empire, finally restored to his throne.

He looked at the stunned board members, then turned his gaze to Nora, who stood proudly by his side.

"Now," Everett said, a ghost of a smile returning to his face. "Let’s talk about the future of Whitmore Grand Holdings."
