Chapter 4 - Secrets in the ShadowsThe night before the crucial board meeting, the tension inside the Boston penthouse was palpable. Everett was in his room, resting his body for the immense physical challenge of the upcoming confrontation. Nora, however, could not sleep.

She sat in the living room, reviewing the final financial audits. The deeper she dug into the Whitmore family finances, the more a sickening pattern began to emerge. It wasn’t just Grant who was stealing. Vivienne had been transferring massive sums of money into an offshore account registered under a medical research firm called Apex Helix.
Curious, Nora bypassed several firewalls using the access codes Everett had provided. When the files finally opened, her breath caught in her throat.
Apex Helix wasn't a research firm. It was a private pharmaceutical manufacturing company based in Switzerland. And the primary chemical compound they produced was a highly specialized, untraceable neuro-toxin designed to mimic the symptoms of advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and severe nerve damage.
The date of the first major transfer to Apex Helix was exactly two months before Everett’s car crash.
"Oh my god," Nora whispered, her hands trembling on the keyboard. It wasn't just a sudden accident. They had been poisoning him long before his car ever went over that cliff. The crash was just an attempt to finish the job when the poison didn't work fast enough.
A floorboard creaked behind her.
Nora gasped, spinning around, expecting to see Everett. Instead, she found herself staring into the barrel of a suppressed pistol.
Grant Whitmore stood in the living room, his navy suit wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot and manic. Beside him was Dr. Sterling, carrying a black medical bag.
"You really shouldn't have been snooping, Nora," Grant said, his voice shaking with a terrifying instability. "My mother always said you were too observant for a servant."
"Grant..." Nora stammered, slowly rising from her chair, trying to keep her body between Grant and the hallway leading to Everett’s bedroom. "How did you find us?"
"Did you really think my mother didn't have a tracker on the vehicle you used to escape?" Grant laughed nervously. "We let you think you were safe. We needed to see how much Everett remembered. But now you’ve found the Apex files. You just couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?"
Dr. Sterling stepped forward, opening his bag and pulling out a pre-filled syringe containing a clear liquid. "A sudden, fatal relapse," the doctor said smoothly, his voice devoid of any human empathy. "The excitement of the gala was too much for his weak heart. And you, Nora, will be found with a suicide note, full of guilt for manipulating a dying billionaire."
"You won't get away with this," Nora said, her voice rising, desperately trying to make enough noise to wake Everett. "The board knows he's alive! The media knows!"
"The board cares about money, not miracles," Grant hissed, stepping closer, the gun aimed squarely at her chest. "Once he's dead, the stock stabilizes under my mother's control. Now, stand still."
Nora’s eyes darted to the heavy glass paperweight on the desk. She knew she had only one shot. As Grant took another step, she grabbed the paperweight and hurled it directly at his face.
The heavy glass struck Grant’s forehead with a sickening crunch. He cried out, dropping the gun as he stumbled backward, blood streaming down his face.
Dr. Sterling lunged forward with the syringe, pinning Nora against the desk. She fought back with everything she had, clawing at his face, keeping the needle inches away from her neck.
Suddenly, the door to the bedroom flew open.
Everett Whitmore stood there. He wasn't shaking. He wasn't weak. Fueled by pure adrenaline and the sight of his protector in danger, he charged into the room. He grabbed Dr. Sterling by the collar of his expensive suit and slammed him into the wall with a strength that defied his medical history. The syringe flew out of the doctor's hand, shattering on the floor.
Before Grant could recover and reach for his gun, the front door of the penthouse was kicked off its hinges. Marcus Vance and three heavily armed security guards swarmed the room, pinning Grant and Dr. Sterling to the ground within seconds.
Everett stood over his bleeding son, his chest heaving, his face an mask of cold, unyielding judgment.
"Take them to the private holding facility," Everett commanded Marcus Vance. "Do not involve the local police yet. I want them present at the board meeting tomorrow morning. I want Vivienne to see exactly what her ambition has cost her."

Nora collapsed against the desk, gasping for air. Everett immediately walked over, kneeling beside her and taking her hands in his. "Are you alright, Nora?"
"I'm fine," she breathed, looking at him with tears of relief. "We have them, Mr. Whitmore. We have everything."
