Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Moretti

Marcus stared at the outstretched hand of the city’s most feared syndicate boss. The silence in the room was heavy, broken only by the quiet ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner.
"I... I don't understand," Marcus stammered, his mind spinning in total confusion. "An empire? I'm just a dishwasher, Mr. Torino. I don't know anything about... about your business."
"My business is built on trust, loyalty, and ruthless discipline," Vincent said, pulling his hand back and folding his arms across his chest. "I can hire a thousand men with business degrees from Harvard to manage my legitimate corporations. I can buy ten thousand soldiers with guns to hold my street corners. But I cannot buy a man who possesses a genuine heart."
Vincent stepped closer, his expression growing dead serious.
"My brother, Marco, was my right-hand man. He was killed three months ago in an ambush orchestrated by the Moretti family," Vincent revealed, a dark shadow passing over his eyes. "Since then, I have been looking for someone to stand by my side. Someone who isn't corrupted by greed. Someone I can train to protect my family when I am no longer here."
"Papa," Sophia spoke up, her small voice cutting through the tension. "Marcus can stay with us? He can live in the blue room next to mine?"
Vincent looked down at his daughter, his features softening instantly. "If Marcus agrees, sweet heart."
Marcus looked from the little girl to the powerful man standing beside her. For twenty-three years, he had been invisible. Society had pushed him into the shadows, treated him like garbage on the sidewalk, stepped over him as if he were an inconvenience.
For the first time in his life, someone was looking at him—not with disgust, not with pity, but with profound expectation.
"What... what would I have to do?" Marcus asked softly.
"First, you heal," Vincent stated firmly. "Second, you learn. You will learn how we operate, how our legal firms manage our shipping lines, how our security infrastructure works, and how to defend yourself. You will be given an education, a home, and a purpose."
Vincent leaned down, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper.
"But you must know the truth, Marcus. My world is dangerous. Last night, the Moretti family tried to abduct my daughter to force me to surrender our northern shipping ports. By giving her your coat, by staying with her until my men arrived, you entered their crosshairs. They know your face now. Going back to your old life is no longer an option. If you walk out those gates alone, Salvatore Moretti will have you killed just to send me a message."
Marcus felt a cold sensation in his stomach. The illusion of choice vanished. He wasn't just a bystander anymore; he was pulled into the deep, bloody currents of a syndicate war.
Before Marcus could answer, the heavy oak door was pushed open violently.
Leo rushed into the room, his suit jacket disheveled, his face pale with sweat. He looked at Vincent with urgent, panicked eyes.
"Boss," Leo gasped, trying to catch his breath. "We have a massive situation downtown."
Vincent’s posture instantly went rigid. "What happened?"
"Salvatore Moretti just launched a full-scale assault on our central logistics hub in the West Docks," Leo reported, his voice shaking. "They brought thirty armed men, set fire to Warehouse 4, and took eight of our senior captains hostage. Salvatore sent a direct radio transmission to our headquarters five minutes ago."
Vincent’s eyes narrowed into slits of deadly obsidian. "What does Salvatore want?"

Leo swallowed hard, casting a quick, fearful glance at Marcus before looking back at Vincent.
"He wants the boy, Boss," Leo whispered. "Salvatore found out that a homeless kid saved Sophia in the alley last night. He says you broke syndicate protocol by bringing a street civilian into your inner sanctum. He’s demanding you trade Marcus for our eight captains by midnight... or he will execute every single one of them on live video."
