Chapter 8 - The Shadows Lift

Spring gave way to a vibrant, sun-drenched summer across the Pacific Northwest. The sprawling gardens of the Moretti estate bloomed with brilliant hydrangeas and towering oak trees, completely erasing the dark, oppressive atmosphere that had once hung over the property like a permanent storm cloud.
Inside the nursery, the heavy blackout drapes had been replaced with light, sheer linen curtains that fluttered gently in the afternoon breeze. The walls had been repainted in warm, soothing tones of cream and soft blue, and not a single trace of electronic hardware remained hidden beneath the custom-built furniture.
Theo, Miles, and Nora—now bursting with health and relentless toddler energy—were currently using a pile of oversized cushions as a makeshift wrestling ring, their joyous shrieks echoing down the hallway instead of cries of terror.
Adrien stood in the doorway of the nursery, holding a cup of espresso in one hand while watching the chaos with an amused, relaxed smile. The days of sleeping with a pistol under his pillow and checking security feeds every twenty minutes were gone. Dominic and his new, thoroughly vetted security team ran a tight, invisible perimeter, ensuring that the only surprises entering the Moretti estate were birthday cakes and delivery packages.
"You're going to spoil them if you let them jump on the furniture like that," a smooth, melodic voice whispered from behind him.
Adrien turned his head. Elena stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame with her arms crossed, watching her daughter Sophie orchestrating a pillow fight between the three triplets with the stern authority of a four-year-old general.
"Let them jump," Adrien replied smoothly, stepping back so Elena could walk into the room. "They spent two years locked in a silent fortress of psychological terror. They're allowed to destroy a few cushions."
Elena smiled, walking over to adjust Nora’s crooked shirt collar as the little girl giggled and scampered past. "You've changed, Adrien. The old Moretti would have had the cushions reinforced with ballistic plating."
"The old Moretti was an idiot who thought power could buy safety," Adrien said quietly, turning to face her. He reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. "It took a four-year-old girl with a battered doll to show me that real power isn't about control. It's about who you're willing to protect."
Elena’s gaze softened. She leaned into his touch, her hand resting naturally against his chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart. "You protect us every day, Adrien. More than you know."
"We protect each other," Adrien corrected her firmly.
From across the room, Sophie suddenly marched over, holding up her cloth doll like a proud trophy. "Mommy! Mr. Moretti! Look! We built a castle!"
The triplets immediately abandoned the cushions, running over and grabbing onto Adrien’s trousers and Elena’s dress, babbling excitedly and demanding to be picked up.

Adrien laughed—a rich, booming sound that would have terrified his enemies in the underworld, but which filled the nursery with pure, unadulterated warmth. He scooped up Theo in one arm and Nora in the other, while Elena swept Miles and Sophie up in a sweeping embrace.
Surrounded by laughter, bright sunlight, and the chaotic beauty of a real family, Adrien finally knew what true peace felt like.
