Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Shadow

The digital terminal screen cast a pale, flickering blue light across Julian Cross’s sweat-soaked face. His fingers flew across the keyboard in a frantic, desperate blur as millions of dollars in untraceable cryptocurrency and corporate assets were systematically drained from Vanguard Security’s offshore accounts and funneled directly into the Moretti children’s secure trust fund.

"Done," Julian whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the syllables. "All accounts wiped. The shell companies are locked out. Total transfer: forty-eight million dollars."

Adrien stood behind him, the barrel of the silver revolver resting lightly against the back of Julian’s custom-tailored suit jacket. He didn't lower the weapon.

"Now," Adrien said quietly. "The name. Who at Vanguard ordered the pediatric acoustic test?"

Julian stopped breathing. He stared at the reflection of Adrien’s cold, unblinking eyes in the dark glass of the monitor. For a long, agonizing moment, the lawyer seemed to weigh his options—between dying tonight in a private mafia study or dying tomorrow at the hands of people far more ruthless than Adrien Moretti.

"It wasn't just a weapons test, Adrien," Julian whispered hoarsely, his shoulders slumping in total defeat. "It was an extraction assessment."

Adrien’s brow furrowed. "Extraction? Of whom?"

"Not of the children," Julian said, closing his eyes. "Of their mother."

Adrien froze. The gun lowered an inch. "Elena? What does Elena have to do with this?"

"Elena isn't just a maid, Adrien," Julian confessed, the words tumbling out in a rush. "Before she came to work for you, her real name was Elena Rostova. She was the chief bio-acoustics engineer at a black-project laboratory in St. Petersburg before the Russian government shut it down five years ago. She specialized in neural-frequency mapping—the exact technology Vanguard has been trying to weaponize."

Adrien’s mind raced, connecting a dozen terrifying dots in a fraction of a second.

The way Elena moved around the estate. The quiet competence with which she handled the children. The fact that she had "found" the battered doll in the laundry chute room—a room located directly beneath the private server access hub of the east wing.

She hadn't stumbled upon the doll by accident.

She had planted it.

Or worse... someone had planted it to force her hand, using her own children as bait to draw her out of hiding.

"Where is she now?" Adrien demanded, spinning away from the desk.

Before Julian could answer, a piercing, deafening alarm shrieked through the estate's integrated security system. The amber emergency lights flashed on simultaneously across every corridor, painting the walls in blood-red hues.

Warning: Perimeter breach at Sector Four. Main gates compromised. Hostile armed extraction team inbound.

"Too late," Julian muttered, a grim, fatalistic smile touching his lips. "They didn't come to bug the nursery, Adrien. They came to take the engineer. And your children were just the trigger to make her reveal herself."

Adrien didn't waste another second on the traitorous lawyer. He raised the butt of his revolver and brought it down hard across Julian’s temple. The lawyer slumped forward onto the keyboard, instantly unconscious.

Adrien sprinted out of the study, his boots pounding against the marble hallway as he raced toward the east wing nursery, his heart hammering against his ribs with a fury that threatened to consume him.
