Chapter 8 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for exactly forty-two minutes.

It was one of the fastest deliberations for a major felony trial in the history of the county courthouse.

When the jury returned to the courtroom at 2:15 PM, the atmosphere was so tense that even the reporters in the gallery stopped typing.

Marcus and Evelyn stood at the defense table, flanked by their attorneys. Marcus was trembling so hard his hands rattled against the mahogany wood.

Judge Harrison looked down at the jury foreperson—a sharp-eyed woman in her fifties.

"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?" Judge Harrison asked.

"We have, Your Honor," the foreperson replied, handing the official verdict sheet to the bailiff.

Judge Harrison read the document silently, nodded once, and handed it back.

"The defendants will stand for the reading of the verdict," the judge ordered.

Marcus and Evelyn stood up.

"On Count One, Aggravated Kidnapping in the First Degree, how do you find the defendant, Marcus Vance?"

"Guilty," the foreperson announced clearly.

"On Count Two, Attempted Murder in the Second Degree... Guilty." "On Count Three, Felony Child Endangerment... Guilty." "On Count Four, Aggravated Domestic Abuse... Guilty."

A heavy wave of relief washed through the public gallery.

"On Count Five, Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Kidnapping, how do you find the defendant, Evelyn Vance?"

"Guilty." "On Count Six, Deprivation of Life-Sustaining Care... Guilty."

Every single count. Total, absolute conviction on all charges.

Two weeks later, the court reconvened for sentencing.

Judge Harrison did not hold back. Sitting beneath the seal of the State of New York, he delivered a judicial rebuke that made front-page news across the nation.

"Marcus Vance," Judge Harrison declared, his voice echoing through the stone courtroom. "You operated under the delusion that wealth, social standing, and corporate power exempted you from the basic laws of humanity. You subjected a pregnant woman—your own wife—to acts of horrific, sadistic cruelty that belong in the darkest chapters of human history."

Judge Harrison pointed an iron finger at Marcus.

"I sentence you to forty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole," the judge declared. "You will serve every single day of that sentence in maximum security."

Marcus collapsed back into his chair, a strangled sob escaping his throat.

"As for you, Evelyn Vance," Judge Harrison continued, looking down at the weeping older woman. "You abused your position as a mother and a human being to enable and participate in the torture of an innocent woman and your own unborn grandchild. I sentence you to fifteen years in state prison."

As federal marshals stepped forward to drag Marcus and Evelyn away in heavy chains, Marcus turned his head, looking back at me one last time as he was led through the side exit door.

I didn't smile. I didn't cheer.

I simply stood beside Clara and Victoria Sterling, holding my head high, watching the door close behind him forever.

The cage had finally closed its doors on the true monsters.
