Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Over the next three weeks, the case against Marcus and Evelyn Vance turned into an avalanche that swept away the entire Vance legacy.

With the financial fraud uncovered, federal prosecutors executed search warrants on every property owned by the Vance family. What they found in the master estate was a horrific ledger of systematic abuse and corruption.

In Marcus’s private study, hidden behind a false bookshelf, federal agents located a secondary server. On that server were years of encrypted files detailing illegal offshore shipping deals, black-market bribery payments to local inspectors, and private surveillance feeds from every room in his house—including the basement.

Marcus had not only recorded my torture; he had archived it like a dark souvenir collection.

When Victoria Sterling showed the defense team the sheer volume of high-definition digital evidence, Arthur Pendelton—Marcus’s chief defense counsel—realized there was no jury on earth that would do anything short of condemning Marcus to life in prison.

On a cold Tuesday morning, Victoria Sterling visited me at Clara’s apartment, where Leo and I were now living under twenty-four-hour police protection.

Leo was sleeping soundly in a wooden crib in the living room, his small face chubby and rosy, completely oblivious to the legal storms raging around him.

"They're begging for a plea deal," Victoria said, sitting at the kitchen island and taking a cup of tea from Clara.

I leaned against the counter, my arms crossed. "What kind of deal?"

"Pendelton offered a plea of guilty to aggravated assault and kidnapping," Victoria explained. "Marcus would take twenty-five years without parole. Evelyn would take ten years in a low-security medical facility, citing her age and heart condition."

I listened to the numbers in silence. Twenty-five years. Marcus would be fifty-nine when he stepped out of prison. Evelyn would be seventy-two—old, but still breathing free air.

"No," I said flatly.

Victoria looked up, surprise flickering across her face. "Elena, twenty-five years without parole is a heavy sentence. A trial means you will have to take the stand. You will have to testify about every detail of those three months in front of a full jury and a national media audience."

"Let them watch," I said, my voice steady and unwavering. "He put me in a dog cage, Victoria. He forced me to watch videos of his affairs while I starved. He let his mother deny me water until I begged. He threatened to cut my baby out of my body with a knife."

I walked over to the crib, looking down at Leo’s peaceful, sleeping face.

"A plea deal gives them a quiet exit," I whispered, turning back to Victoria. "It lets them pretend they were victims of a tragic family breakdown. I want a trial. I want every frame of those video files played in open court. I want the world to see what Marcus and Evelyn Vance truly are."

Victoria stared at me for a long moment. Slowly, a fierce, proud smile spread across her face.

"Then a trial it is," she said, pulling a legal pad from her briefcase. "Jury selection begins in fourteen days."

That afternoon, I received a visit from Investigator Sarah Vance.

She walked into the apartment carrying a small cardboard box.

"We finished processing the basement property," Sarah said gently, setting the box on the table. "The city building inspector condemned the house this morning due to illegal structural modifications. It’s being seized under federal forfeiture."

She pulled an item from the box and handed it to me.

It was my original wedding ring—a heavy platinum band set with a massive diamond that Marcus had forced onto my finger three years ago, a symbol of the golden prison he had constructed for me.

I held the ring in the palm of my hand. It felt cold, heavy, and completely dead.

I walked over to the kitchen window, opened the glass, and tossed the ring out into the snow-covered garden five floors below.

"I don't need his gold anymore," I said, turning back to Sarah with a clear, bright smile. "I have everything I need right here."
