Chapter 5 - The Danforth Empire Strikes Back

Realizing that legal maneuvers were failing, the Danforth family unleashed their full corporate power. Within forty-eight hours, three major financial institutions froze my company's credit lines, citing pending high-value fraud litigation initiated by Julian Danforth.
At the same time, local tabloid outlets published slanderous articles painting Josephine as an opportunistic grifter attempting to extort a prominent local family.
"They are trying to starve us out financially and force a settlement," Marcus informed me during an emergency board meeting at my office. "They know that if this goes to a full criminal trial, Julian and Felicity are going to prison. They want to crush your business so you can't afford to keep fighting."
"My business is built on rock-solid assets," I declared, standing up behind my desk. "If they want a war of attrition, they'll get one. Sell off my private equity holdings. Liquidate my personal real estate portfolio. I don't care if I end up with nothing left in the bank—every single cent I have will go toward destroying them and clearing Josephine's name."
That evening, I returned to the estate exhausted, my suit jacket thrown over my arm. Josephine met me in the main foyer. She held a newspaper featuring a smeared photograph of her at the shelter.
"They're attacking you because of me," she said, her voice laced with worry.

"No," I said firmly, walking up to her and taking the newspaper gently from her hands. "They are attacking us because they are terrified of the truth. Don't worry about the headlines or the money, Josephine. I lost what mattered most a year ago when I let you go. I won't lose it again."
She looked into my eyes, searching for any trace of the doubt that had once ruined us. Finding none, her expression softened, and for the first time in over a year, she placed a gentle hand on my arm.
