Chapter 6 - The Arrest

The sun was barely kissing the horizon the next morning when the sirens started.

We were staying in the secure rental house when my phone buzzed with an automated alert from the ring camera at our primary residence across town.

I tapped the app and pulled up the live feed.

Two county sheriff cruisers were parked across our driveway. Four deputies in tactical vests marched up the front steps. One of them banged loudly on the heavy oak front door.

A moment later, the door swung open. Linda Vance stood there in a silk bathrobe, her hair unstyled, looking furious and disheveled. Behind her, Gary peered over her shoulder, shouting at the deputies.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Linda shrieked, her voice screeching through the phone’s audio feed. “Do you know who my husband is? We are respectable citizens! Get off our property!”

“Mrs. Linda Vance?” the lead deputy asked, holding up a piece of white paper. “You are under arrest pursuant to an active felony warrant for aggravated assault and child endangerment. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

“Assault?!” Linda screamed, thrashing as the deputy stepped forward and clamped steel handcuffs around her wrists. “That’s a lie! Clara is framing us! Gary, do something! Call Ben!”

“Ben can’t help you, ma'am,” the deputy replied calmly, guiding her firmly down the porch steps. “Your son was picked up thirty minutes ago at his motel on concurrent accessory charges.”

Gary rushed down the steps behind them, waving his arms hysterically. “This is an outrage! We’ll sue this county into bankruptcy! You can’t arrest my wife!”

“Step back, sir, or you’ll be joining her in the back of the cruiser,” another deputy warned, pushing Gary back with a flat palm.

I watched the entire scene unfold on my phone screen in absolute, unbroken silence.

Linda was shoved into the back of the patrol car. The door slammed shut with a heavy, metallic thud that seemed to echo right through my soul.

The nightmare they had tried to inflict upon my daughter—the gaslighting, the violence, the cowardly cover-up—was finally meeting the unyielding wall of reality.
