Chapter 5 - The Corporate Shield

While Ellie slept safely in her new bedroom at the secure rental house, Rachel Kim and I sat at the glass dining table reviewing the financial disclosures my husband’s corporate firm had just handed over under court order.

“Ben is in much deeper trouble than we initially thought,” Rachel said, sliding a thick stack of forensic accounting printouts across the table.

I adjusted my glasses, scanning the line items. “What am I looking at?”

“It’s not just the personal accounts,” Rachel explained, tapping a pen against a corporate ledger. “Three months ago, Ben quietly transferred fifty thousand dollars from your joint savings account into a private investment fund managed exclusively by his father, Gary. And guess who the primary beneficiary of that fund is?”

I raised my eyebrows. “Linda?”

“Linda and Gary's retirement property in Florida,” Rachel said triumphantly. “Which means not only did they attempt to execute a physical assault and cover it up, but Ben was actively draining your marital assets to fund his parents' lifestyle behind your back. Under our state's laws, financial dissipation during a pending divorce—especially when combined with child endangerment—allows us to pierce the corporate veil of any shell companies they set up.”

My phone rang. It was Rachel’s direct line. She answered it immediately, putting it on speaker.

“Kim Law Firm, this is Rachel.”

“Rachel, it’s Detective Miller from the county sheriff’s department,” a gruff, serious voice came through the speaker. “We’ve completed our forensic review of the video file your client provided, along with the witness statement from cousin Maya.”

My heart rate ticked upward slightly. “And?” I asked.

“And,” Detective Miller continued, “we have sufficient probable cause. We’ve just issued an arrest warrant for Linda Vance on charges of felony child abuse and aggravated assault, and an accessory warrant for Ben Vance for aiding in the concealment of a crime and fabricating false statements to responding officers.”

Rachel smiled, leaning back in her chair. “Thank you, Detective. We will make sure our legal team files the supporting civil affidavits to accompany the criminal indictments by morning.”

“It’s over for them,” Rachel said, hanging up the phone and looking at me with profound respect. “By tomorrow afternoon, Linda will be booked into the county detention center, and Ben will be facing criminal charges that could carry prison time.”

I looked out the window, watching the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the manicured lawn. I didn't feel joy. I didn't feel triumphant celebration. I just felt the cold, hard weight of justice finally catching up to people who believed they were above the law.
