Chapter 9 - The House on the Hill

One year later.

The autumn sun cast a warm, golden glow over fifteen rolling acres of green land in Franklin, Tennessee. The air was filled with the sweet scent of fresh cedar, pine, and fallen leaves.

In the center of the clearing stood a majestic, custom-built four-thousand-square-foot timber-frame home. Wraparound stone porches, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and a warm, inviting fireplace chimney rose toward the blue sky.

I stood on the front lawn, holding a set of blueprints, watching my construction team put the finishing touches on the outdoor patio.

A pair of small arms wrapped around my waist from behind.

I turned around to see Amy, glowing with happiness, her hazel eyes sparkling under the sun. She was wearing a loose summer dress that couldn't hide her beautifully rounded belly—she was six months pregnant with our second child, a little girl we had already decided to name Grace.

“It’s finished, Connor,” Amy smiled, resting her head against my chest. “It’s absolutely perfect.”

A joyous shout rang out across the lawn as two-year-old Frederick came running down the wooden porch steps, chasing our new golden retriever puppy. He was healthy, strong, his laughter echoing across the open fields.

My chief clerk Brenda stepped onto the porch, holding a tray of fresh lemonade, alongside Amy’s father, a hardworking retired mechanic who had spent the last three months helping me frame the roof of our new home with his own hands.

“This is a real home, Connor,” Amy’s father said, shaking my hand warmly with a calloused grip. “A house built with honest hands and real love.”
