Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Triumvirate

Six months later.
The Davidson County Criminal Courthouse was packed to capacity for the trial of State of Tennessee v. Teresa Bradley, Mason Carter, and Betsy Carter.
The media had picked up the story—dubbing it the “Birthday Party Heist”—and local reporters lined the front rows.
I sat at the prosecution table alongside ADA Sarah Vance, while Amy sat proudly in the front row of the gallery, holding my hand across the wooden railing. She looked radiant—dressed in a sharp cream suit, her hair styled, her confidence fully restored.
The defense team tried every desperate angle. They attempted to portray Teresa as a lonely, grieving grandmother who had simply been trying to manage her son’s chaotic household. They tried to claim Mason was a naive young man dragged into the scheme by his overbearing aunt.
Then ADA Vance called her star witness to the stand: the professional locksmith Teresa had hired.
“Mr. Jenkins,” ADA Vance asked the burly technician on the witness stand. “Can you identify the person who paid you $1,500 in cash to drill out the safe in Mr. Connor Bradley’s master bedroom on the morning of August 24th?”
Mr. Jenkins pointed his finger directly at Teresa Bradley. “Her. She showed me a fake power-of-attorney document claiming her son was mentally incapacitated and that she needed immediate access to his estate deeds for medical reasons.”
The courtroom erupted into whispers.
Next came the bank manager from Pinnacle Bank, testifying to Mason’s fraudulent $450,000 loan application, complete with forensic hand-writing experts verifying that every signature belonging to me was an intentional, malicious forgery.
Finally, ADA Vance played the audio recording from my home’s security system—a backup feed I had managed to recover from my cloud storage, which Teresa hadn't realized was recording her conversation in the backyard during the party.
My mother’s loud, arrogant voice echoed through the high-ceilinged courtroom speaker system:
“In this house, I make the rules. Your wife is only good for giving birth and washing dishes. Once Mason gets the deed finalized today, Connor won't have a choice. We’ll have the house, the business, and the money, and that little white-trash girl will be back on the street where she belongs!”

The gallery gasped. Several jurors shook their heads in absolute disgust.
At the defense table, Teresa buried her face in her hands, while Mason looked at his mother with pure hatred, realizing his life was officially ruined.
