Chapter 3 - The Soho Confrontation

While the corporate financial storm tore through Vance Tower, I was settled comfortably in the master suite of the Carlyle Estate in upstate New York. The crisp autumn air rustled through the maple trees outside my window. Little Victoria was sleeping peacefully in a handcrafted oak bassinet, surrounded by high-level private security detail stationed throughout the sixty-acre property.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was a video call from Marcus, my chief private investigator and former head of Carlyle security.

"Clare," Marcus’s voice came through clearly over the speaker. "Julian just arrived at the Soho apartment complex. Mia’s legal team is refusing to let him inside."

"Put the live feed on screen," I said calmly, sipping warm tea.

The video feed snapped to the entrance of the Soho building. The scene was pure chaos. Dozens of paparazzi cameras flashed frantically in the dimming afternoon light as Julian, his hair disheveled, his tie torn off, pounded wildly on the glass front doors of the lobby.

"Mia! Open the damn door!" Julian screamed, completely unconcerned with the cameras capturing his utter humiliation. "They froze all my accounts! The credit cards didn't work at the parking garage! Mia!"

The heavy glass door swung open slightly, and Mia stepped out into the private courtyard, flanked by a burly defense attorney. She wasn't wearing her usual pristine designer clothes; she was in a simple grey tracksuit, her face swollen from crying.

"Julian, get away from me!" Mia shrieked, backing away from him as if he were radioactive. "The federal agents took everything! They froze the baby's trust account! They said the apartment was bought with stolen money!"

"It wasn't stolen! It was corporate allocation!" Julian yelled back, grabbing her by the arms. "We just need to talk to my grandfather's lawyers! We still have the boy! He's the male heir, Mia! They can't strip the family trust if we have the heir!"

Mia slapped his hand away with terrifying force. "Are you out of your mind?! There is no family trust! Clare’s attorneys served me with a third-party liability lawsuit an hour ago! They’re suing me personally for twenty million dollars in damages for fraud and conspiracy!"

"What?" Julian froze, his mouth agape.

"She owned everything, Julian!" Mia screamed, her voice cracking with pure despair. "You told me she was just a quiet lawyer who sat at home while you built the empire! You lied to me! You told me if I gave you a son, I would be the lady of the Vance family!"

"I am the Vance family!" Julian bellowed at the sky, his eyes wild and bloodshot.

"You are a penniless fraud!" Mia yelled back, turning on her heel and slamming the iron gates shut in his face. "Don't ever come back here!"

From my quiet bedroom in upstate New York, I watched Julian collapse onto his knees on the concrete sidewalk, surrounded by the blinding flashes of a hundred photojournalists. The man who had walked into my delivery room to discard his daughter like trash was now locked out of the very palace he had built on deceit.
