Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

That evening, after the grand opening gala concluded, I returned to the Carlyle Estate in upstate New York.

The mansion was warm and quiet. Soft music played through the ground-floor living room as the fireplace crackled gently. Marcus was in the nursery, softly reading a bedtime story to Victoria, while Khloe was in the study finalizing the evening's press releases.

I walked into my private study, carrying a hot cup of tea, and sat down at the large mahogany desk that had belonged to my father.

On the corner of the desk sat a single unopened letter that had arrived in the afternoon mail. It bore the return address of the Green Haven Maximum Security Facility in upstate New York.

I opened the envelope calmly. Inside was a handwritten letter from Julian, written on thin, cheap lined paper.

Clare,

The days here are endless. The noise never stops, and the concrete is cold. Every night when the lights go out, all I hear in my head is the sound of that baby crying in the delivery room, and the sound of my own voice telling you she wouldn't carry my name.

I lost everything, Clare. I traded my wife, my real daughter, and my soul for a fraud who didn't even love me. The guards showed me the newspaper today—the picture of you opening the children's hospital with Victoria. She looks just like you.

I don't expect you to forgive me. I know I will die in this place. But please... when she grows up, don't tell her I was a monster. Tell her I was just a fool who threw away the greatest treasure in the world.

Julian.

I held the letter over the small metal brass bowl resting on my desk.

I picked up the antique silver lighter next to my tea, flicked the flame, and touched it to the corner of the paper.

The orange flame caught instantly, consuming the words, the regret, and the ghost of the man who had tried to break me. I watched silently as the ash fell into the bowl, disappearing into fine grey dust.

I walked out of the study and down the quiet, carpeted hallway toward the nursery.

The door was slightly ajar. Through the crack, I saw Marcus carefully tucking Victoria into her crib, whispering a final goodnight before turning off the soft nightlight. He stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door closed with clinical quietness, and looked at me with a soft, genuine smile.

"She's fast asleep," Marcus whispered, taking my hand in his, his fingers warm and strong. "It was a big day for her."

"It was a big day for all of us," I replied, leaning up to kiss his cheek softly.

We walked side by side down the grand staircase toward the warm, glowing light of the living room. The past had been completely purged. The traitors had been erased, the empire was restored, and my daughter was growing up in a world built on strength, truth, and absolute protection.

I looked out through the tall glass windows toward the moonlit grounds of my estate. The night was peaceful, the future was clear, and the sovereign queen had won her kingdom.
