Chapter 6 - The West Pier

The old boathouse at the west pier sat half-submerged in the black, freezing waters of Thornwood Lake, its wooden pilings groaning against the relentless pressure of the lake currents. A single yellow light bulb flickered unsteadily above the rotting double doors, casting long, distorted shadows across the weed-choked dock.

A black SUV sat idling fifty yards back in the tree line, its exhaust pluming white into the damp night air.

Warren Cade stepped out of his Range Rover, moving with absolute, cold fury. Behind him, Detective Thorne motioned to two unmarked backup units creeping up the access road without sirens.

"Cade, stay back," Thorne hissed, unsheathing his firearm. "Let tactical handle the breach."

"I am coming with you," Warren said, his voice brooking no argument. He reached into his coat pocket, his hand closing around a heavy steel tire iron he had grabbed from the trunk.

Before Thorne could argue, Warren broke into a silent, rapid sprint toward the boathouse.

Inside the damp, echoing structure, the air smelled of gasoline, fish scales, and stale sweat. Bound tightly to an old wooden chair in the center of the room was Elena Parker. Her face was bruised, her dark hair matted with blood, her breathing shallow and ragged. Standing over her was a massive, scarred man in a leather jacket—Viktor Vance’s chief enforcer, a thug known only as Bruno.

Bruno held a heavy metal wrench in his right hand, tapping it rhythmically against his palm as he glared down at her.

"Last chance, Elena," Bruno rasped, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "Where did you hide the original master ledger? Give us the thumb drive, and maybe we drop you off at the hospital before you freeze."

Elena spat a mouthful of blood onto the wooden floorboards, her eyes flashing with fierce defiance. "Go to hell, Bruno. My daughter is safe. You’ll never find what I gave to the feds."

Bruno raised the wrench, his face twisting into a cruel snarl. "Then you're out of time."

CRASH.

The heavy wooden double doors of the boathouse blew inward with a deafening splintering sound as Warren Cade kicked them off their hinges.

Bruno spun around in shock, raising the wrench, but before he could take a step, Detective Thorne’s voice rang out like a thunderclap from the doorway.

"FBI AND POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON OR YOU'RE A DEAD MAN!"

Bruno froze, his eyes darting toward the armed officers swarming the entrance. In a desperate move, he lunged toward Elena with the wrench raised high—

Warren didn't hesitate. Adrenaline and pure, unfiltered rage propelled him forward. He tackled Bruno with the force of a freight train, sending both men crashing hard against a stack of rusted oil drums. Bruno swung the heavy wrench, grazing Warren’s shoulder and tearing his coat, but Warren retaliated with a brutal, calculated strike to the enforcer’s jaw, followed by a vicious takedown that pinned Bruno flat against the concrete floor.

Detective Thorne was across the room in three strides, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Bruno’s wrists and slamming his face into the floorboards.

"Clear!" Thorne shouted to his backup units.

Warren didn't look at the subdued enforcer. He scrambled across the floor to Elena Parker, frantically using his pocketknife to slice through the thick zip-ties binding her wrists and ankles.

"Elena!" Warren gasped, pulling her upright as she slumped against his chest. "Can you hear me?"

Elena blinked open swollen, bruised eyes, staring up at him with dazed disbelief. "Mila...? Is my... is my baby safe?"

May you like

"She's safe," Warren said, his voice breaking for the first time all night. "She's at the hospital, warm and waiting for you. You're going to see her tonight."

Elena let out a ragged, sob of pure relief, collapsing into his arms as the wailing sirens of approaching ambulances finally echoed across the lake.
