CHAPTER 4 – THE WAR FOR AUDREY VALE

The first thing Dominic Vale learned after losing his wife was that grief had a sound.
People always imagined grief as crying.
Screaming.
Breaking down.
They imagined shattered glass, desperate phone calls, a man collapsing under the weight of losing the person he loved.
They were wrong.
Real grief was silent.
It was waking up every morning and forgetting for one second that the person beside you was gone.
It was reaching for a hand that would never be there.
It was watching your child sit alone in a room and knowing there was nothing in the world powerful enough to bring back what she lost.
But now, five years later, Dominic discovered there was something worse than grief.
The possibility that the person responsible had been standing beside him the entire time.
Adrian Cross disappeared before sunrise.
That alone told Dominic everything.
In twenty years of knowing him, Adrian had never left without explanation.
Never ignored a call.
Never avoided a meeting.
Never shown fear.
But when Dominic ordered Marcus to bring him in for questioning, the answer came within ten minutes.
“His apartment is empty.”
Dominic looked up from his desk.
“Empty?”
“Completely.”
“What about security footage?”
Marcus placed a tablet down.
“Disabled.”
Dominic stared at the screen.
Adrian had planned this.
He had known.
“Find him.”
Marcus nodded.
“We’re already searching.”
Dominic looked at the photograph of Elena on his desk.
His wife.
The woman who had known the truth before anyone else.
The woman who tried to warn him.
And the woman he failed to protect.
His hands tightened.
“Bring him to me.”
Marcus paused.
“Alive?”
Dominic looked at him.
A dangerous silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
A lesser man would have answered differently.
But Dominic needed answers.
Not revenge.
Not yet.
Claire had spent five years running from her past.
Now her past had finally caught her.
She stood in Dominic’s private library, surrounded by books, old photographs, and expensive furniture that probably cost more than her entire apartment.
She felt like she didn’t belong.
And Dominic noticed.
“You’re uncomfortable.”
Claire looked at him.
“You’re surprised?”
“No.”
He walked toward the window.
“Most people who come here want something.”
“And what do you think I want?”
Dominic turned.
“I think you want the truth.”
Claire almost smiled.
“You sound like my father.”
The mention of Daniel Mercer changed the atmosphere.
Dominic’s expression softened slightly.
“What was he like?”
Claire looked away.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
The question surprised her.
Because it wasn’t curiosity.
It sounded like regret.
“He was stubborn.”
A faint smile appeared.
“He thought every problem in the world could be solved if people just stopped lying.”
Dominic lowered his eyes.
“He sounds like someone I should have known.”
Claire looked at him.
“You should have.”
The words hit harder than she intended.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Because both understood the same thing.
Two families had been destroyed by secrets.
Audrey sat in the corner of the library drawing.
Claire noticed immediately.
The little girl had followed her father everywhere since she arrived.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she was watching.
Children noticed things adults ignored.
Especially children who had learned to survive in silence.
Claire sat beside her.
“What are you drawing?”
Audrey turned the paper around.
Claire froze.
It was a picture of a house.
A woman.
A little girl.
A man.
And behind them…
A shadow.
Claire pointed.
“Who is this?”
Audrey looked at Dominic.
Then at the drawing.
Then she wrote:
THE BAD MAN.
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“Adrian?”
Audrey nodded.
Then she wrote something else.
HE CAME TO OUR HOUSE BEFORE THE FIRE.
Dominic, who had been standing across the room, immediately moved closer.
“What?”
Audrey looked scared.
Claire gently touched her hand.
Not forcing.
Just reminding her she was safe.
Dominic knelt.
“Audrey. Look at me.”
The girl did.
He signed slowly.
Tell me.
Her fingers shook.
Then she began.
He was angry.
Dominic’s face changed.
“Angry about what?”
Audrey looked down.
Mom found something.
Claire and Dominic exchanged a glance.
“What did she find?”
Audrey grabbed her notebook.
Wrote.
Stopped.
Erased.
Tried again.
Finally, she wrote:
THE BOOK.
“The book?”
Marcus repeated the word.
They were in the underground security room beneath Vale Tower.
The place where Dominic kept everything he trusted.
Which was very little.
Claire sat beside Audrey.
Dominic stood over old files.
“What book?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Marcus looked at Dominic.
“Could Elena have hidden something?”
Dominic was silent.
Because suddenly he remembered.
Before the bombing.
Three days before.
Elena had asked him something strange.
A question he dismissed.
“If you discovered someone you loved was betraying you, what would you do?”
He had laughed.
He thought it was hypothetical.
It wasn’t.
“She knew,” Dominic whispered.
Claire looked at him.
“She knew Adrian was dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“And she tried to protect Audrey.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
“And I let Adrian stay.”
The guilt in his voice surprised Claire.
This was the man everyone called a monster.
The man people feared.
But standing there…
He wasn’t a monster.
He was a father who had failed his child.
And Claire understood something she never expected.
Dominic Vale wasn’t dangerous because he had no heart.
He was dangerous because he had one.
And people had used it against him.
The attack came at 2:13 in the morning.
The first warning was the power outage.
The second was the sound of broken glass.
The third was Audrey screaming silently.
Claire woke instantly.
Years of fear had trained her body before her mind.
She grabbed the nearest object.
A lamp.
Not a weapon.
But something.
Then she heard footsteps.
Outside the bedroom.
Dominic’s house had dozens of security measures.
Nobody got inside.
Nobody.
Unless someone knew exactly how to bypass them.
The door opened.
A shadow entered.
Claire moved in front of Audrey.
The figure stopped.
Then a voice whispered:
“Still protecting other people’s children, Claire?”
Her blood froze.
Adrian.
Dominic arrived seconds later.
He had been sleeping three rooms away when security alarms activated.
He entered with a gun in his hand.
But he stopped.
Because Adrian Cross was standing beside his daughter.
Holding a knife.
Not against Audrey.
Near her.
But close enough.
Every guard behind Dominic raised their weapons.
“Drop it.”
Adrian smiled.
“Still giving orders.”
Dominic’s voice became deadly.
“Move away from my daughter.”
Adrian looked at Audrey.
“You know, Dominic…”
A strange sadness crossed his face.
“She looks exactly like Elena.”
Dominic’s grip tightened.
“Don’t say her name.”
Adrian ignored him.
“She was always too curious.”
Claire noticed something.
Adrian wasn’t angry.
He was desperate.
Desperate people were unpredictable.
“What do you want?” Dominic asked.
Adrian laughed softly.
“What do I want?”
He looked around.
“Everything.”
A pause.
“Everything I helped you build.”
Dominic stared.
“You betrayed me.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“I saved you.”
The room went silent.
Dominic frowned.
“What?”
“You think Elena died because of me?”
Adrian smiled bitterly.
“You never asked why the bombing happened.”
Claire felt cold.
“What are you saying?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Your father knew.”
Dominic turned.
“Knew what?”
“That Elena was planning to leave you.”
The words hit like an explosion.
Claire stared.
“That’s a lie.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Is it?”
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a small envelope.
And threw it toward Dominic.
Dominic caught it.
Inside was a letter.
From Elena.
His wife.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
The first line destroyed him.
Dominic, if you are reading this, I failed.
The room disappeared.
There was only Elena’s handwriting.
Only her words.
Only the truth he had never known.
I discovered what Adrian was doing.
I discovered the money transfers.
I discovered the people he was working with.
Dominic stopped breathing.
The letter continued.
But there is something worse.
He knows about Claire Mercer.
Dominic looked up.
Claire went pale.
The letter continued.
Daniel Mercer trusted me with the evidence.
He knew his daughter would be hunted.
I promised him I would protect her.
I promised him Audrey would be safe.
Dominic’s hands shook.
Because now he understood.
Elena wasn’t hiding from him.
She was protecting him.
Protecting everyone.
The final line was the one that broke him.
Dominic, the person you trust most is the person who destroyed us.
A gunshot exploded.
Everyone moved.
Adrian had fired.
Not at Dominic.
At the ceiling.
Chaos erupted.
Smoke filled the room.
Guards rushed forward.
Claire grabbed Audrey.
Dominic moved toward Adrian.
But Adrian was already gone.
Only one thing remained.
The envelope.
And another note.
Dominic picked it up.
His face changed.
“What is it?” Marcus asked.
Dominic looked at Claire.
Then Audrey.
Then the note.
“He has the book.”
Claire felt a chill.
“What book?”
Dominic answered quietly.
“The one that contains every name.”
Every politician.
Every businessman.
Every criminal.
Every person connected to the empire.
The book that could destroy Chicago.
The book that Adrian had killed for.
And now he had it.
The next morning, every television station in Chicago reported the same thing.
A message had been leaked.
A war was coming.
A war between powerful men.
A war that would not be fought in courtrooms.
A war that would involve everyone Dominic Vale loved.
Including Audrey.
Including Claire.
Dominic stood outside the hospital room where Audrey slept.
Claire joined him.
“You know what happens now.”
He nodded.
“They’ll come for her.”
“Yes.”
“They’ll use her against me.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then Dominic said something Claire never expected.
“I’m sending you away.”
She looked at him.
“What?”
“You and Audrey leave Chicago.”
Claire stared.
“You think I’m going to abandon her?”
“No.”
His voice softened.
“I think you’re the only person she trusts.”
That hurt more than anger.
Because Claire realized Dominic wasn’t protecting his empire anymore.
He was protecting his daughter.
And maybe…
He was protecting Claire too.
“I’m not leaving.”
Dominic looked at her.
“You don’t understand what’s coming.”
Claire held his gaze.
“My father died protecting the truth.”
A pause.
“I spent five years hiding from it.”
She looked toward Audrey’s room.
“I’m done running.”
For the first time…
Dominic Vale looked at Claire Monroe not as a mystery.
Not as a threat.
Not as a woman connected to his past.
But as someone standing beside him.
Someone fighting the same war.
That evening, Adrian Cross released his first attack.
A video.
A message.
A declaration.
His voice filled every screen in Chicago.
“Dominic Vale built an empire on secrets.”
A pause.
“Now I will show the world what those secrets cost.”
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
Claire.
Audrey.
Dominic.
Together.
The caption underneath was simple.
THE FALL OF THE VALE FAMILY BEGINS.
Dominic watched the screen.
Claire stood beside him.
Audrey held both their hands.
And for the first time in years…
Dominic realized something.
Adrian had spent years trying to destroy his family.
But he had made one mistake.
May you like
He forgot something important.
Families built on love were harder to kill than empires built on fear.
