CHAPTER 3 – THE MAN STANDING BESIDE THE CRIME LORD

For seven years, Dominic Vale believed he knew exactly who stood beside him.

He believed loyalty was something that could be measured.

Years served.

Battles survived.

Secrets protected.

Adrian Cross had been there through everything.

When Dominic built his empire.

When enemies tried to destroy it.

When politicians smiled in public and threatened him in private.

When Dominic lost his wife and became a man nobody recognized.

Adrian had been there.

The man beside him.

The man he trusted.

The man he called brother.

And that was the most dangerous kind of enemy.

Because strangers had to earn your trust.

Family only had to break it once.

The rain had not stopped for three days.

Chicago looked like a city drowning in its own secrets.

From the windows of Vale Tower, Dominic watched the streets below.

Millions of people moving through their ordinary lives.

Buying coffee.

Walking dogs.

Holding hands.

Laughing.

They had no idea how fragile everything was.

How easily one person’s betrayal could destroy hundreds of lives.

Behind him, Marcus Bell placed another file on the desk.

“This is everything we found on Claire Monroe.”

Dominic didn’t turn.

“And?”

Marcus hesitated.

That alone was an answer.

“Her real name is Claire Mercer.”

The room went silent.

Dominic slowly looked back.

“Mercer?”

Marcus nodded.

“Daniel Mercer’s daughter.”

For the first time in years, Marcus saw something close to shock on Dominic’s face.

“Impossible.”

“I thought so too.”

Marcus opened the file.

“Daniel Mercer was a financial investigator. Five years ago, he started looking into money transfers connected to several shell companies.”

Dominic walked toward the desk.

“Mine?”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.”

The word hung between them.

Dominic picked up the file.

He remembered Daniel Mercer.

A stubborn man.

A man who believed rules mattered.

A man who had once publicly accused powerful people of corruption.

A man who disappeared after claiming he had discovered something enormous.

The official story was simple.

A tragic accident.

A failed robbery.

A dead investigator.

But Dominic had always suspected there was more.

“What was he investigating?”

Marcus looked at the next page.

“That’s where things become strange.”

“Explain.”

“Daniel Mercer wasn’t investigating you.”

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

“He was investigating someone inside your organization.”

A cold feeling moved through Dominic.

“Who?”

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

He didn’t need to.

Dominic already knew.

“Adrian.”

Across the city, Claire sat alone in a small café.

The same place she had gone every morning for five years.

The same corner table.

The same coffee.

The same routine.

Routine kept people safe.

But today everything felt different.

Because someone knew her.

Someone had found her.

And worse…

Dominic Vale knew her.

She watched people through the window.

Every stranger looked suspicious.

Every passing car looked like a warning.

She hated this feeling.

The feeling of being hunted.

The feeling she had spent five years escaping.

Her phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

YOU HAVE 24 HOURS TO LEAVE CHICAGO.

Claire stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

OR AUDREY WILL DIE LIKE HER MOTHER.

The cup slipped from her hand.

Coffee spilled across the table.

But Claire barely noticed.

Because suddenly this wasn’t about her anymore.

It was about Audrey.

Dominic arrived at the café twenty minutes later.

Claire knew he was coming before she saw him.

Men like Dominic Vale didn’t enter rooms.

They changed them.

The customers became quieter.

The staff became nervous.

The entire atmosphere shifted.

He walked toward her table alone.

No guards.

No intimidation.

Just Dominic.

Claire looked up.

“What do you want?”

His expression didn’t change.

“The truth.”

She almost laughed.

“Funny.”

“Why?”

“Because men like you usually don’t ask for the truth.”

Dominic sat across from her.

“They demand it.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But you’re asking me.”

His eyes studied her.

“You know my daughter.”

Claire looked down.

“I know Audrey.”

“You know her from before.”

Silence.

There it was.

The question.

The one she had been avoiding.

Claire looked away.

“I saw her before.”

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“Where?”

Claire swallowed.

“The night your wife died.”

For a moment, Dominic didn’t move.

The world around them disappeared.

The sounds of coffee machines.

The conversations.

The rain against the windows.

Nothing mattered.

Only that sentence.

“You were there.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The question was filled with anger.

Pain.

Confusion.

Claire looked into his eyes.

“Because my father was there too.”

Dominic froze.

“Daniel Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“Your father knew my wife?”

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“He knew she was in danger.”

The past came back like a storm.

Five years earlier.

Claire was twenty-four.

Young.

Naive.

Still believing that good people were rewarded.

Her father had spent months investigating financial records.

He had been nervous.

Paranoid.

Different.

One night, he came home and locked every door.

Every window.

Then he told Claire something she would never forget.

“Someone inside Dominic Vale’s organization is selling information.”

Claire had frowned.

“Who?”

Her father shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“But you know Dominic?”

“No.”

“Then why are you investigating him?”

Her father looked at her.

“Because powerful men don’t always know who is standing beside them.”

Those words stayed with her.

Because days later, Daniel Mercer was dead.

And Claire discovered her father’s final message.

A single note hidden inside his desk.

Protect the girl. She saw everything.

Claire didn’t understand.

Not until the bombing.

Not until she arrived at the scene.

Not until she saw a little girl sitting beside a burning car.

Audrey.

Alive.

Silent.

Terrified.

And standing nearby…

Adrian Cross.

Back in the café, Dominic looked like someone had taken the ground from beneath him.

“You saw Adrian?”

Claire nodded.

“He was there.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

The question was sharp.

Claire looked at him.

“Because my father told me not to trust you.”

That hurt more than Dominic expected.

“Why?”

“Because he believed you were part of it.”

The silence was brutal.

Dominic stared at her.

“Did he say that?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Claire looked down.

“Because your name was on the documents he found.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

“What documents?”

“I don’t know.”

“Claire.”

“I never saw them.”

“Then how do you know?”

She hesitated.

And Dominic saw the answer before she spoke.

“My father gave them to someone.”

“Who?”

Claire looked toward the rain-covered window.

“Your wife.”

That night, Dominic returned to Vale Tower with a different kind of anger.

Not explosive.

Not reckless.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

Adrian was waiting.

“You wanted to see me?”

Dominic stood across from him.

“Yes.”

Adrian smiled.

“About Audrey?”

“No.”

A pause.

“About Daniel Mercer.”

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But it disappeared.

Dominic noticed.

“You remember him.”

Adrian leaned back.

“Of course.”

“Why?”

“Because he was investigating us.”

“Us?”

The word echoed.

Adrian recovered quickly.

“I mean the company.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Interesting choice of words.”

Adrian said nothing.

“You told me Daniel Mercer was a criminal trying to blackmail me.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“He was.”

“You lied.”

“No.”

“You told me he was trying to destroy my family.”

“He was!”

Dominic stared at him.

“And then my wife died.”

Silence.

Adrian looked away.

That was enough.

Dominic knew.

A thousand conversations.

A thousand memories.

Everything suddenly looked different.

The man who stood beside him.

The man who helped him bury his wife.

The man who comforted his daughter.

The man who told him to move on.

Had been hiding something.

Meanwhile, Claire returned to her apartment.

She expected fear.

Instead, she found something worse.

A message written on her wall.

Not sprayed.

Not painted.

Written carefully.

With a marker.

A message meant for her.

YOU SHOULD HAVE ASKED YOUR FATHER WHY HE CHOSE DOMINIC OVER YOU.

Claire stepped back.

Her heart raced.

Because only one person could know that.

Only one person knew what happened that night.

She turned.

The apartment was empty.

Almost.

On the table sat an old photograph.

One she had never seen before.

A photograph of her father.

Dominic.

Adrian.

And another woman.

Dominic’s wife.

Taken months before the bombing.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence.

THE FOUR PEOPLE WHO KNEW THE TRUTH.

Claire stared.

Four people.

Daniel Mercer.

Dominic Vale.

Adrian Cross.

And Elena Vale.

But Elena was dead.

Daniel was dead.

Which meant only two people remained.

Dominic.

And Adrian.

The next morning, Dominic received a package.

No sender.

Inside was a small recording device.

A note.

LISTEN BEFORE YOU TRUST ANYONE.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then a woman’s voice.

His wife.

Elena.

His entire body froze.

“Dominic…”

Her voice shook.

“If you’re hearing this, it means something happened to me.”

His hand tightened around the device.

“I need you to understand something.”

A pause.

“I was never afraid of your enemies.”

A breath.

“I was afraid of the man standing beside you.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Because he already knew.

But he needed to hear it.

“Elena…”

Her voice became quieter.

“Adrian knows about the child.”

The recording ended.

Dominic stood completely still.

Then he looked toward the city.

Toward the empire he built.

Toward the people he trusted.

And for the first time in years…

Dominic Vale felt something he hated.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Betrayal.

Across town, Claire opened her apartment door.

Dominic was standing outside.

Alone.

She immediately stepped back.

“What are you doing here?”

His face was different.

Not the crime lord.

Not the untouchable king.

Just a man who had lost too much.

“I need your help.”

Claire stared.

“With what?”

Dominic looked at her.

“To destroy the man standing beside me.”

A long silence followed.

Then Claire asked the question that changed everything.

“Are you ready to find out why your wife really died?”

Dominic answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

Claire nodded.

“Then we start with the truth.”

May you like

She looked toward the city.

“And the truth will destroy both of us.”
