Chapter 7 - The Final Trap

The gallery erupted into furious murmurs.

Mark turned his head toward me, a faint, sinister smile returning to his lips. His father, Richard, sat in the second row, looking thoroughly satisfied with his legal team's opening gambit. They were attempting to murder my character, discredit my motherhood, and plant reasonable doubt in the jury's minds.

"Order in the court!" Judge Evans slammed her gavel down. "Mr. Thorne, you had better have concrete evidence to back up such severe allegations."

"We do, Your Honor," Thorne declared confidently. "We will be calling our key witness, Dr. Harrison Blake, a private forensic geneticist who conducted an independent paternity test using court-sanctioned samples."

During the court recess, Emma was trembling with anger. "How dare they?! How dare they claim Lily isn't his?! You were completely faithful to him for three years!"

"It's a classic Vance tactic," Victoria said calmly, sipping her coffee in the private witness room. "They don't need to prove it. They just need to plant a seed of doubt in one juror's mind to force a mistrial."

"Victoria," I said, looking at her with absolute certainty. "Let them call Dr. Blake."

Victoria looked at me, surprised. "Sarah, we can block his testimony under procedural grounds—"

"No," I interrupted, a calm smile spreading across my face. "Don't block him. Call him right away. Because two weeks ago, I had feeling Richard Vance would try a stunt like this."

An hour later, the trial resumed. The defense called Dr. Harrison Blake to the stand—a middle-aged man in a sharp suit who looked visibly nervous under the bright courtroom lights.

"Dr. Blake," Thorne asked, walking up to the witness stand. "Can you confirm to the court the results of the paternity analysis you conducted on the DNA samples provided from infant Lily Hope Vance and defendant Mark Vance?"

Dr. Blake cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. "Yes. Based on the markers provided in the defense submitter file... Mark Vance is excluded as the biological father."

"Thank you, Doctor," Thorne said triumphantly, turning to the jury. "No further questions."

Prosecutor Rostova stood up for the cross-examination. She didn't look worried. She walked slowly toward the witness stand, holding a blue folder.

"Dr. Blake," Rostova said softly. "Who delivered the DNA sample labeled 'Mark Vance' to your private lab?"

"It... it was courier delivered by Vance Enterprise legal representatives," Blake stammered.

"I see," Rostova said. "And did you personally verify the identity of the person who provided that saliva swab?"

"Well, no... it had an official legal seal—"

"Your Honor," Rostova interrupted, turning to the judge. "We request permission to enter State’s Exhibit C: an official, court-ordered, chain-of-custody DNA test conducted three days ago by the State Forensic Crime Lab, supervised directly by the State Police Department."

Rostova pulled two sheets of paper from her folder and handed them to the clerk.

"This certified state report confirms two things," Rostova announced, her voice booming across the room. "First, infant Lily Hope Vance is 99.99% the biological child of Mark Edward Vance. And second..."

She turned and stared directly at Dr. Blake.

"...the sample provided to Dr. Blake by the defense was not Mark Vance's DNA at all. It was a synthetic bacterial culture designed to produce a false negative result. And we have phone records showing Dr. Blake received a fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer from Richard Vance’s shell company forty-eight hours ago!"
