Chapter 4 - The Shadows of Vance Estate

Two weeks passed.

My daughter, whom I named Lily Hope, remained in the NICU. Every day, I sat beside her incubator, holding her tiny, fragile hand through the gloved armholes, singing soft lullabies while monitors beeped steadily in the background. She was getting stronger every day, slowly gaining weight, her lungs expanding on their own.

While Lily fought her battle in the hospital, Victoria and Emma worked tirelessly to secure our new life.

Through court orders, Victoria froze all of Mark’s bank accounts and seized control of our marital residence. However, when Victoria and I went to the house with a police escort to collect my personal belongings, we discovered something disturbing.

The house had been completely ransacked.

My closets were emptied, my personal notebooks were gone, and the hard drives from the home security system had been ripped directly out of the walls.

"His parents," Emma gasped, looking around the ruined living room. "Richard Vance had a spare key. They’re trying to destroy evidence of his financial fraud."

"Let them try," Victoria said calmly, stepping into Mark’s home office. She walked directly to a large oil painting hanging on the north wall, reached behind the frame, and pressed a hidden lever.

The painting swung open, revealing a hidden wall safe.

I stared in surprise. "How did you know that was there?"

"Because," Victoria said, pulling a slip of paper from her pocket, "when your neighbor Claire grabbed your phone from the flowerpot, she didn't just capture the audio of the assault. Your phone's cloud system had been backing up Mark's keystrokes for two months via a spyware program Mark had accidentally installed on his own shared network."

Victoria entered a six-digit code into the safe's digital keypad. The heavy steel door clicked open.

Inside were stacks of legal documents, offshore account statements, property deeds, and a black leather journal.

I reached in and pulled out the journal. As I flipped through the pages, my blood ran cold.

Mark hadn't just abuse me out of explosive anger. It had been a meticulously planned, multi-year campaign. He had written down daily notes tracking my mood, my contact with my sister, my doctors' appointments, and the exact dosages of mild sedatives he had been slipping into my evening tea to make me feel constantly tired and confused.

"He was poisoning me," I whispered, the paper shaking in my hands. "He was systematically breaking down my mind so I would agree to sign over my grandfather’s trust..."

"This isn't just domestic abuse anymore," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register. "This is attempted murder by slow poison. This journal guarantees Mark Vance will spend the next thirty years behind bars."

Suddenly, the front door crashed open.

Two men in dark suits stepped into the hallway. Behind them stood Richard Vance—Mark’s father. He walked in holding a golden walking stick, his white hair immaculately styled, his eyes burning with arrogance.

"I suggest you put those documents back in the safe, young lady," Richard Vance said, his voice smooth, powerful, and utterly devoid of mercy.
