Chapter 9 - Solid Ground

That evening, a private celebration was held on the rear terrace of the Darien estate.
The sun set over Long Island Sound in a spectacular array of pink, gold, and deep purple. Soft jazz music drifted from speakers hidden among the flowering gardens, and light strung through the oak trees cast a warm, golden glow across the terrace.
Caleb was running across the lawn with Gabriel’s golden retriever, laughing hysterically as the dog chased a tennis ball toward the fountain.
My grandfather sat in a woven wicker armchair by the garden wall, sipping lemonade, chatting happily with Gabriel’s parents, who had flown in from Vermont for the weekend.
I stood by the stone balustrade, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the gentle waves lap against the shoreline below.
A moment later, warm hands gently rested on my waist.
Gabriel stepped up beside me, leaning over to kiss my temple before resting his chin gently against my shoulder.
"You delivered a incredible speech today, Allison," Gabriel whispered, his arms wrapping comfortably around my waist, holding me close against his chest.
"I meant every word," I smiled, leaning back against his warm frame. "Three years ago, I didn't think a day like this was possible."
Gabriel reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.
My heart skipped a beat.
He stepped around to face me, taking both of my hands in his. His clear hazel eyes looked into mine with an expression of pure, unreserved devotion.
"Allison," Gabriel said softly, his voice rich and steady. "When I first met you on that construction site in Albany, I saw a woman who had built an entire fortress out of sheer determination to protect her son. Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of watching you shine as a leader, a mother, and the most incredible person I’ve ever known."
He opened the velvet box.
Inside rested a simple, breathtaking platinum ring set with a radiant cushion-cut sapphire, surrounded by a delicate halo of small diamonds.
"I don't offer you a world built on promises or luxury, Allison," Gabriel said, looking deep into my soul. "I offer you my heart, my honesty, my hand to build with, and a love that will stand firm through every storm life brings us. Will you marry me?"
I looked at the ring, then up into Gabriel’s warm, true eyes.
There was no hesitation. There was no fear. There was no lingering doubt from the past.
"Yes," I whispered, tears of pure joy shining in my eyes. "Yes, Gabriel! A thousand times yes!"

He slipped the sapphire ring onto my finger, drew me into his arms, and kissed me deeply under the canopy of stars.
Across the lawn, Caleb let out a wild cheer, running toward us with the dog, while my grandfather raised his glass in a quiet, emotional toast from his chair.
