Chapter 5 - Cracks in the Armor

The luxury of the Plaza penthouse suddenly felt like a gilded cage.

For three weeks following the gala, the media circus intensified. The Harlow family, desperate to save their failing business and avenge their public humiliation, had hired a private investigator to dig into my past. They couldn't find my real identity yet—Adrian's security team had done a masterful job of scrubbing Sophia Callahan from public digital records—but the pressure for a DNA test was mounting from the Russo Group’s board of directors.

"They're calling for a special emergency session on Friday," Adrian muttered, pacing the length of the penthouse living room. His tie was undone, his hair slightly disheveled. It was the first time I had ever seen him look stressed. "If we refuse the test, the board will vote to freeze the Rosewood shares, citing potential fraud."

I sat on the plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a silk robe, watching him. Over the past month, our relationship had shifted. We were no longer just co-conspirators; we spent our late nights talking about our childhoods, our fears, our dreams. I learned that Adrian’s cold exterior was a defense mechanism built after his father’s tragic death, which had left him to carry the weight of an empire alone at twenty-four. And he learned about the pain of my past, the loss of my parents, and my fierce protection of my younger brother.

"Then let them freeze it," I said softly.

Adrian stopped pacing and looked at me, bewildered. "What?"

"Adrian, this lie was always going to have an expiration date," I said, standing up and walking over to him. I placed my hands on his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart. "Look at what we've done. We saved your company from an immediate collapse. We showed Victoria and her toxic world that they can't break people just because they think they're superior. But I can't live a lie forever. I miss my brother. I miss... being real."

Adrian reached up, cupping my face in his large hands. His eyes were filled with a fierce, possessive intensity. "You think I care about the company anymore, Sophia? Yes, I built this empire, but it means nothing if I lose you. If this lie falls apart, they will come after you for fraud. The Harlows will prosecute. I won't let them put you in a courtroom. I won't let them hurt you."

"Then what do we do?" I whispered, my lips inches from his.

"We play our final card," Adrian said, his voice growling low in his throat. "We don't give them a DNA test. We give them a marriage certificate."

My breath caught. "Marriage?"

"If we marry, your legal status as my spouse grants you joint executive control over my personal assets, which matches the forty percent weight of the Rosewood Trust," Adrian explained, his eyes burning into mine. "The board won't be able to touch us, even if the trust goes into probate. The Harlows will have no legal standing to question your identity because your power will come directly from me."

"Adrian... that's insane," I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs. "A fake marriage to cover a fake identity?"

"There is nothing fake about how I look at you, Sophia," he said, his voice dropping to a raw, honest whisper. He leaned down, and finally, his lips met mine.

The kiss was everything I had been starving for—deep, desperate, and filled with a passion that burned away every doubt in my mind. He pulled me flush against his body, his hands gripping my waist, celebrating the fullness of my curves, making me feel cherished in a way I had never experienced before.

When he finally pulled away, both of us gasping for air, he rested his forehead against mine. "Marry me, Sophia. Not for the company. For me."

I looked into the eyes of the most feared man in Manhattan, and for the first time, I saw an absolute vulnerability.

"Yes," I whispered. "Yes, Adrian."

But our moment of peace was shattered when my burner phone rang. I picked it up, seeing an unknown number. When I pressed answer, Victoria Harlow’s smug, venomous voice filled the room.

"Hello, 'Sophia,'" she sneered. "Or should I say... Sophia Callahan from Queens? I hope you’re enjoying your last night at the Plaza. Because tomorrow morning, the police are going to arrest you."
