Chapter 2 - The Architecture of a Lie

"I don't understand," I said, my voice trembling as the limousine sped down the darkened highway away from the Hamptons. "Why would you lie for me? Why would you tell a room full of the most powerful people in the city that a plus-size catering waitress owns half your company?"

Adrian poured two glasses of sparkling water from the small bar built into the armrest, handing one to me. I took it, realizing my fingers were still shaking.

"It wasn't entirely a lie," Adrian said, his eyes studying me with an intensity that made my skin tingle. "The Rosewood Trust is real. It does hold forty percent of my family's assets. And for the last seven years, the identity of the true heir has been a closely guarded secret, managed by an aging attorney who passed away last week."

"But that heir isn't me," I insisted.

"The heir's name is Sophia Vance. She was a reclusive woman who lived in Europe and died without a single living relative three months ago," Adrian explained calmly. "The public doesn't know she's dead. The market doesn't know. If the board of directors finds out the trust is currently vacant and tied up in probate, a war will break out for control of the Russo Group. I needed a Sophia. And tonight, Victoria Harlow handed me one on a silver platter."

I stared at him, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place, though the picture they painted was terrifying. "You used me as a shield."

"I protected you from a room full of wolves," Adrian countered softly, leaning forward. "And in return, you are going to help me keep those wolves at bay. Look at it this way, Sophia: tonight, they laughed at your body, your clothes, your status. Tomorrow morning, every newspaper, blog, and high-society column in New York will report that the mysterious Sophia Vance has returned, and that she is a woman who refuses to conform to their pathetic, starved standards of beauty."

He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a low, magnetic murmur. "You have the face of a queen and the spine of a soldier. I watched you tonight. You didn't cry. You didn't beg. You stood tall even when they tried to break you. I don't need a fragile socialite for this, Sophia. I need you."

"And what happens to my life?" I asked, my heart pounding. "My apartment in Queens? My job? My brother?"

"Your apartment will be kept, but you won't be living there. Your brother’s financial troubles will disappear by midnight tonight," Adrian stated, as if he were ordering a cup of coffee. "You will move into a penthouse at the Plaza. You will be given a wardrobe befitting your new title. You will have a personal stylist, a security detail, and a monthly stipend that will make your catering salary look like pocket change. All I ask is that you play the part of Sophia Vance for three months. Attend the galas, sit by my side at the board meetings, and let the world believe you hold the power."

"And if I say no?" I challenged, though the thought of returning to that tiny apartment and the humiliating whispers of the catering world felt suddenly unbearable.

"If you say no, I will have my driver take you back to Queens," Adrian said, his expression completely serious. "I will find another way to handle my board. But Victoria Harlow will ensure you never work in this city again. She is cruel, Sophia, and she has the money to make your life a living hell out of spite for what happened tonight."

I looked down at my hands. The uniform fabric felt rough against my skin. I thought about my brother, Leo, who was working eighty hours a week just to pay off his medical debts. I thought about the landlords who threatened to evict me every time rent was two days late. I thought about Victoria’s laughter.

"Three months," I said, looking back up into Adrian's dark eyes. "No longer."

"Three months," Adrian agreed. He extended his hand once more. This time, when I took it, it felt less like a rescue and more like a pact with the devil himself.

The limousine pulled up to a private entrance behind the Plaza Hotel. Within an hour, I was escorted into a duplex penthouse that defied imagination. The floors were polished marble, the floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over a glittering Central Park, and a massive king-sized bed was covered in silk sheets that felt like clouds.

On the vanity lay a single black velvet box. I walked over and opened it. Inside sat a heavy diamond necklace, its stones catching the light like fallen stars. Beside it was a note written in elegant, masculine script:

Welcome to the high life, Sophia Vance. Let them whisper.
