Chapter 2 — The Woman Who Had Been Watching Him

Vivian did not go far first.

That was the mistake men like Sebastian always made in their imagination of escape.

They believed leaving meant running.

Vivian understood it differently.

Leaving meant disappearing from predictability.

She sat in the back of a black SUV two blocks from the penthouse building, watching the skyline reflect morning light like nothing had changed.

Audrey slept in a secured bassinet beside her.

Safe.

Breathing.

Real.

Vivian exhaled slowly.

Only now did her hands begin to shake.

Not from fear.

From completion.

She had not decided to leave that morning.

She had decided months ago.

That was the difference.

She pulled out her phone.

No messages sent.

Only notes.

Evidence.

Dates.

Screenshots.

Flight records.

Hotel confirmations.

Natalie Voss dinner reservation logs.

She didn’t cry.

Not because she wasn’t hurt.

Because crying required surprise.

And Vivian had stopped being surprised months ago.

She whispered softly to her daughter.

“You’re not going to grow up inside a lie,” she said.

Audrey moved slightly in her sleep.

Vivian looked out the window.

And for the first time, she allowed herself to think something she had been refusing to name.

May you like

This wasn’t heartbreak.

This was exit strategy.
